    1. Yorkshire BILLCLIFFs
    2. Hello Listers, I have been reading the archives of this list and have seen a reference or two to West Yorkshire and Billcliff (et al.) blacksmiths. My Billcliff ancestors were also blacksmiths and were living in Batley, Yorkshire (in the West Rididng) during the 1871 and 1881 censuses. According to those census records, my ancestor, JOSHUA BILLCLIFF, should have been born in Ryhill, Yorks. in about 1812. Joshua's wife, MARY HARROP, was born in Ossett, Yorks. in about 1815. Interestingly enough, there are two more Billcliff blacksmiths living on the same street in Batley (Wellington Street) in the 1871 census as my JOSHUA - who is then age 59. The first is Joseph Bilcliffe (38) born in Wragby and the other is James Billcliffe (36) born in Ryhill. I have no evidence as yet to link these "other" Billcliffs to my Joshua although I strongly suspect a relationship. Here is the known family group of my ancestor, JOSHUA BILLCLIFF: Joshua Billcliff b. abt 1812 in Ryhill, Yorkshire who married Mary (Harrop) Billcliff b. abt 1814 in Ossett, Yorks. 1. Sarah Billcliff b. about 1839 in Batley, Yorks. 2. Mary Billcliff b. abt 1846 in Batley, Yorks. 3. William Billcliff b. abt 1850 in Batley, Yorks. 4. Elizabeth Billcliff b. abt 1852 in Batley, Yorks. 5. Emma Billcliff b. abt 1856 in Batley, Yorks. There might also be a Joseph Billcliff but I don't yet have a year of birth for him. Do any of you recognize these Billcliffs? Does anyone know of the Billcliffs of Ryhill? I look forward to hearing from some of you. Pam Buckley buckspazz@aol.com 21 April 2001

    3. Pam, I've checked through my information and can find little that will help you. The only thing I came across (which from your email you already know) is a refernce to a Joshua Billcliffe in the 1877 Post Office Directory in Wellington Street Batley with the occupation of 'smith and farrier'. My own interest in mainly with the Biltcliffe's from the Cumberworth/Denby areas of Yorkshire.
