    3. This has been received from the Rootsweb administration: Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. 1. [BILTCLIFFE] Help Keep This List Active
    2. Jim Jackson
    3. I just wanted to encourage you all to make use of this list in your family searches. A large number of Rootsweb lists have been made inactive due to no messages over a period of time. We want to keep as many lists active as we possibly can and your participation will help toward that goal. If you have a "brick wall" in your family search, send in a message with as much information as you have and let's see if someone may be able to help fill in those blanks. Best Wishes, Jim

    2. Hi, Thanks for your note. We finally did find John Biltcliff and Ann at 78 Margaret St. , Ashton-under-Lyne, in the 1851 census. With them were children Isaac, George, Elizabeth, Jane, John, Ann, James and Ellen. I also had baptisms for son Isaac and dau. Sarah Ann. AS this is where Bilcliffe/Biltcliffe, etc. entered my line,I have not traced back, but another correspondent, Margaret Grinnell, said that she believes this John may have been the son of Isaac Biltcliffe and Lydia Wainright, citing land tax searches she did. These Bilcliffe cousins of mine seem to have up and left the area, as I can find very little of them after this. Perhaps emigrated. Bev

    3. Hi everyone Please accept my apologies, I havent introduced myself to this list. I thought that I had until, after posting the above message, I had a look at the archive messages! 1. Bilcliffe's in Glass Houghton in 17th century

    3. Hi everyone Found in old book on Castleford and District in olden times The chief families of Houghton (this was what the present day Glass Houghton used to be called) during the 17th century were the Bilcliffes, Sudburys, Flemings and the leakes. The 16th century Manor House (parts of which still existed at the time the book was published in 1904) was the residence of Richard Bilcliffe, Esq., a devoted royalist, who fought for King Charles, and took a prominent part in the defence of Pontefract Castle against the parliamentary army. During the first seige, and just after the garrison had been releived by Sir Marmaduke Langdale in 1645, Bilcliffe in charge of the Houghton volunteers, supported by 500 cavalry under the command of Langdale Sunderland, of Featherstone, was encamped at Houghton, when Fairfax, at the head of the regiment of roundheads, effected a night surprise, and after a sharp skirmish routed the royalists, seizing all their munitions of war, and capturing most of Sunderlands horses. Subsequently Bilcliffe joined the defenders of the castle, and was present when the garrison capitulated some months later. The "Northowran Register" contains lists of suspected Popish Recusants. Under date January 1680, we find the names of the following residents of Houghton as "suspects":- "Thomas Prince and Anne his wife, Margaret Bilcliffe, Mary Bilcliffe ye elder, Mathew Bilcliffe, Anne Bilcliffe and Thomas ffleminge; also Anne Norton and Sarah Atak of Castlefurth, John Grocoke, Elizabeth Grocoke, ffrancis Johnson and Ann Coplin of Kippax" These were cited to appear at the Doncaster sessions, January 1682. 3. I have come across the John Billcliffe that you are looking for in my research into the history of my house. He was a blacksmith and once owned the land on which my house was built, and in 1816 sold it to another John Billcliffe (carpenter) who built my house. There were at least 3 John Billcliffes of roughly the same age around at that time. I don't know what relation they were to each other. John Billcliffe (blacksmith) is married to Ann Heaton & had a daughter Elizabeth baptised 1829. John Billcliffe, carpenter (married Hannah Waggstaff) is son of Ann Billcliffe and was apparently born out of wedlock). This is the one I am looking for and because he was born out of wedlock, it is difficult to find out much about him. I would be grateful for any information you might come across. Isaac Billcliffe was married to Sylvia of Lydia Wainwright of Shore Hall who owned much land, and had a son called John Billcliffe (blacksmith). Sylvia/Lydia had died by 1822 as a lease and release transaction refers to her as "late" and John as being her only son and heir. Isaac is still alive and a blacksmith in the 1822 trade directory. Land tax registers (at Wakefield Archives Office, West Yorkshire) indicate that Isaac Billcliffe owned and occupied property until 1823/4. In 1825 Billcliffe trustees own some property as well as John Billcliffe and others. Has Isaac died and left property for his family to occupy? I think John carried on the family blacksmith business. 1827 John owns and occupies a blacksmiths shop and other Billcliffes occupy land and property of Mr Fenton. John B (blacksmith) seems to have sold up the blacksmiths shop and allotment to Joseph Moorhouse by 1836 - also land goes to John Saxton and Wm Greaves (tallow chandler is involved). John Billcliffe is now described as being of Ashton Moor and he is known in the Milner deeds (Penistone Library) to have to have come into possession of an estate in Thurlstone in 1835. Title begins with Rebecca Hall of White Lee in Bradfield in 1776. Full deeds are with Mr RH Milner, Rose Cottage, Stottercliffe Road, Thurlstone S36 9RF I am pretty sure I have come across John Billcliffe's baptismal records and wedding records in the Archives Dept. Barnsley Central Library, Shambles Street, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. It may be worth writing. If they moved to Ashton, that was perhaps Ashton Under Lyne in Lancashire. You could try writing to the Archives Dept, Public Library, Ashton-Under-Lyne, Lancashire, England. They may be able to give you more pointers. Happy searching. Please get in touch if I can be of any more use. 2. Hello All, Since Jean mentioned that she thought the Joseph Bilcliffe of Wellington Street, Batley, Yorkshire might be hers, I figured I'd post what I have of the Billcliffes in Batley in 1871 & 1881. Note that Joseph Bilcliffe's wife is named Jane. Also the last names are spelled the way they were recorded on the census. I transcribed these from my dad's notes and have not viewed the actual census records myself. Therefore, I can't say how close these families were living to each other. 1871 Wellington Street, Batley, Yorks. Joshua Bilcliffe Head 59 Blacksmith POB: Ryhill, Yorks. 3. Pam, I've checked through my information and can find little that will help you. The only thing I came across (which from your email you already know) is a refernce to a Joshua Billcliffe in the 1877 Post Office Directory in Wellington Street Batley with the occupation of 'smith and farrier'. My own interest in mainly with the Biltcliffe's from the Cumberworth/Denby areas of Yorkshire. My Billcliff ancestors were also blacksmiths and were living in Batley, Yorkshire (in the West Rididng) during the 1871 and 1881 censuses. According to those census records, my ancestor, JOSHUA BILLCLIFF, should have been born in Ryhill, Yorks. in about 1812. Joshua's wife, MARY HARROP, was born in Ossett, Yorks. in about 1815. Interestingly enough, there are two more Billcliff blacksmiths living on the same street in Batley (Wellington Street) in the 1871 census as my JOSHUA - who is then age 59. The first is Joseph Bilcliffe (38) born in Wragby and the other is James Billcliffe (36) born in Ryhill. I have no evidence as yet to link these "other" Billcliffs to my Joshua although I strongly suspect a relationship. Here is the known family group of my ancestor, JOSHUA BILLCLIFF: Joshua Billcliff b. abt 1812 in Ryhill, Yorkshire who married Mary (Harrop) Billcliff b. abt 1814 in Ossett, Yorks. 1. Sarah Billcliff b. about 1839 in Batley, Yorks. 2. Mary Billcliff b. abt 1846 in Batley, Yorks. 3. William Billcliff b. abt 1850 in Batley, Yorks. 4. Elizabeth Billcliff b. abt 1852 in Batley, Yorks. 5. Emma Billcliff b. abt 1856 in Batley, Yorks. There might also be a Joseph Billcliff but I don't yet have a year of birth for him. Do any of you recognize these Billcliffs? Does anyone know of the Billcliffs of Ryhill? I look forward to hearing from some of you. Pam Buckley buckspazz@aol.com 21 April 2001
