Gangsters Open Fire on Officers After Robbing Tire Store Two Kansas City, Kas., policemen were murdered by bandits shortly after 3 o'clock this morning. They were Sergeant Elmer BIGGS, 61 years old, 20 years on the department, and Patrolman Fred WHEELER, 35 years old, BIGGS' partner on the night patrol. The murder of the two policemen occurred at Ninth street and Ruby drive, and followed the kidnapping of two men by the bandits. While BIGGS was killed instantly, shot through the mouth and head, WHEELER lived long enough to whisper a disconnected story of what occurred. WHEELER was shot through the stomach, shoulder, right breast and the calf of the leg. His revolver, every chamber fired, lay beside him when he was found. BIGGS clutched his weapon, from which five shots had been fired. BIGGS was married, the father of two grown sons and two daughters. He had been on the police department 20 years. He lived at 1330 Yecker avenue. WHEELER, who had been on the police department only four months, lived with his mother, Mrs. Auguste WHEELER, 1030 Ridge avenue. NOTE: the above are excerpts from a long article about the murder. It includes pictures of both policemen. Contact me direct if you want more details.
