H. Biggs said to have died @ Blaine or Harrison, W. Va.): 1) William Upton Biggs, born abt. Aug. 1875 (1900 Census, Elk District, Mineral Co., W. Va. - Vol. 21, E.D. 67, Sheet 1, line 55). He died 12 Sept. 1930, age 54 yrs, 10 mos., 6 days, at Pierce, Tucker Co., W. Va., of tuberculosis. He was a mechanic, married (no other data). Had a son Leon Harrison Biggs, who died age 3 at Pierce (no other data on ch.) 2) Sylvester Monroe Biggs. He married 1910 at Randolph Co., W. Va. to Rebecca Ellen Smith. Nothing further. 3) Ada Lottie Biggs, born abt. 1878. She m. 3 Feb. 1898 at Swanton, Garrett Co., MD to Lewis F. Paugh, age 32 (born abt. 1866, res. of Garrett Co. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WCE.2ACIB/970.2 Message Board Post: Ralph: Catherine "Kate" Lipscomb, dau. of Ambrose Lipscomb (1762-1841) and his wife Winifred (Mardis) Lipscomb (c.1768-1847) was their only child born in what is now Preston County, W. Va. (7 were born in Frederick Co., Va. and one was born in Loudoun Co.). Catherine is said to have died in childbirth in 1842 and her husband William L. Biggs in the 1850 Census is found living with a presumed 2nd wife named Elizabeth, age 31 (thus born abt. 1819, whereas Catherine Lipscomb was born 1808). The children by Catherine are NOT living with them (they are listed with their paternal grandparents). A pretty compelling argument. And yet.......1) there is no record of a 2nd marriage for Wm. L. Biggs, 2) that the children are staying with their grandparents does not necesarily mean that their mother is dead, 3) ages in census records are often far wide of the mark, 4) this Elizabeth was born in W. Va. - as was Catherine, 5) West Virginians seem to delight in using their 1st and middl! e names interchangably, and 6) she had two nieces named Catherine Elizabeth Lipscomb - might they have been named after her FULL name? This is all speculation, of course. There were 3 children by this supposed 2nd wife Elizabeth: Sarah (b. 1844) m. a Mr. Plum (no other data that I know of); Alcinda Jane (1847-1916) m. Samuel V. Loughry of Tucker County, W. Va. They had 15 children - several of whom have intermarried with Lipscombs! Unfortunately, Alcinda's death record does not give her mother's name; the 3rd child was Emma Caroline Biggs (1848-?), who m. her 1st cousin Joseph Harrison Biggs (b. 1854 - I have an un-verified date of death of 1890). They had at least 6 children. Conclusion: if someone can locate Emma's death record (if her husband died in 1890, she may have re-married), it MIGHT have her mother's maiden name noted and THAT would clear up once and for all just who this Elizabeth really was. Their last (?)child George E. H. Biggs was born & died 1888 in Gr! ant Co., Va. Any help would be much appreciated.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WCE.2ACIB/970.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Ralph: In 1988 I requested the veteran's record for Joseph Harrison Biggs, 6th W. Va. Infantry, Company F and received "unable to locate" in reply. Very likely the same man, I think. At any rate, the Jos. H. Biggs who was son of William L. and Catherine (Lipscomb) Biggs lived in Preston County - and Co. F was all Preston men. Jos. is listed in the 1860 Census there as a wood chopper, age 21, living at a hotel in Rowlesburg kept by John & Julie Peters. He married 21 Aug. 1861 to Salome Jane Weimer (parents names unknown - the writing of her surname "Weimer" in the 1857 Biggs Family Bible could easily be mistaken for "Weaver"). She was born 14 Apr. 1840 and died 28 Apr. 1864. Jos married 2nd to Sarah A. Henderson on 25 Jan. 1870. She was born abt. 1853 at Evansville, Preston Co., WV. In the 1870 Census they are residing near Rowlesburg (next door to his brother Ambrose Lipscomb Biggs) where he is listed as a farmer . Living with them is his mother in law Mary Henderson, age! 40. Jos. died on his farm shortly before 29 June 1873 (I don't know the cause) when his estate was appraised and inventoried (Preston County Estates, Vol. 10). His widow was re-married in 1875 to William B. Fauling - I do not know her date of death. By his 1st wife Salome, who died in childbirth, he had one daughter Alice Salome Biggs, who I think died in infancy or at birth (no further record). By his 2nd wife Sarah he had one daughter born 20 Aug. 1872 at Lewis County but recorded at Preston County (no name on the birth record - how did you obtain the name Ju Rhetta?) Do you have any further record of her? I am researching the descendants of Ambrose Lipscomb (1762-1841), who was father of Catherine (Lipscomb) Biggs. The latter's brother Levi Lipscomb (1798-1878) was my great, great grandfather. PS. Are you the son of Ralph Poling Biggs? If so, I have you in my records!

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WCE.2ACIB/1053.1 Message Board Post: I would like to help, though I would need a little more info. Would you have her husband's first name? Where did she live out the remainder of her life? Any children? Women are hard to find with out some connecting family info. Most census indexes use head of household's name. To find her before marriage in her parents household the best luck would be the 1850 census, that I do not have access to, she would be about 15 then. (if she was not married by the age of 15) 1840 census list only the head of household's name. Perhaps asking someone with Ancestry's data subscription to do a look up can be helpful. I can look up page #'s in the 1850census, my census images are not indexed. Reply with some info and I will see what I kind find.
