    2. Can't remember if I had sent this one out or not: Collings, William Elston Kentuckiana Genealogy: Biographies: Collings, William Elston By Dee Pavey (Dee) on Wednesday, July 21, 1999 - 07:11 pm: Extracted from "The Collings Story of Pigeon Roost Massacre" by Roy H. Beldon, circa 1950 as printed in "The Collings, Richeys and The Pigeon Roost Massacre" compiled and published by Constance Hackman, Leona M. Lawson and Kenneth R. Scott. Used with permission of Alice R. Scott and Constance Hackman. Copyright Alice R. Scott 1980. "In 1809, William Elston Collings came from Kentucky across the Ohio River at Louisville into Indiana bringing his family, the families of his married sons and daughters and a few other families to make a settlement. Moving northward from Jeffersonville, he crossed the eastern spur of the Silver Knobs into the fertile valley of Pigeon Roost Creek, located in the northern part of Clark's Grant." "This site was called Pigeon Roost due to the type of wild pigeons which, in countless numbers, gathered in this region to feed upon the heavy beech mast, nest and rear their young in the great trees of the primitive forest. These birds were called passenger pigeons due to their migratory flights from one part of the region to another. Their number was so great that often in flight their huge mass in the sky was like unto a cloud darkening the sun. When lighting in trees their accumulated weight was sufficient to break branches from the trees. These falling branches would strike branches and pigeons below, killing and crippling many fowl. The settlers then could take the pigeons with club and sack. When marketed the price was twenty-five cents per bushel. So abundant was this source of food the settlers considered it inexhaustible. They feasted upon wild pigeon meat to the fullest extent of their appetites, prepared as potted pigeon and pigeon pie. Thousands of bushels were sold for years at the Ohio River markets." "Upon arrival, the settlement was begun in the spring of 1809. One quarter of a mile southeast of the present monument was constructed the two room cabin of William E. Collings, the leader of the settlement, a man nearing sixty years of age, but in rugged health and an expert rifleman. He was an experienced soldier, having served in the Revolutionary Army, and being a Virginian bore the name of "Longknife" which name was used for him by both the settlers and the Indians. His two youngest children lived with him, Lydia and John, fifteen and thirteen years of age respectively, at the time of the Indian attack. Henry Collings' house was located one hundred yards east of this, while Richard Collings' house was located about three quarters of mile east. West of William's home, about one-half mile, was the home of John Morris. Two miles west was the home of John Biggs, while farther southwest, three miles from the Collings home, was located the cabin of Dr. John Richey; Biggs and Richey having married daughters of William E. Collings. Two other homes near the settlement were those of James Beal and Ben Yount. To the north of Pigeon Roost and along the creek were the homes of the brothers, Jeremiah and Elias Payne, Isaac Coffman and Daniel Johnson, who were relatives of William Collings." "No Indian tribes were located near Pigeon Roost and the troubled conditions of the frontier had caused no Indian troubles among these settlers. The few groups of Indians who visited the settlement traded with the settlers, held shooting matches with them and appeared very friendly. William Collings, though often beating them in matches, won respect and favor of the Indians by giving them some lessons in marksmanship." "For protection in case of hostilities three blockhouses had been constructed in the Pigeon Roost area but none at Pigeon Roost. One was located near Vienna, six miles north of Pigeon Roost, one on Silver Creek, eight miles southeast and one at the home of Zebulon Collings, son of William, five miles south." Bev

    2. If you haven't seen this, seems to be a neat page: _http://www.andalusiastarnews.com/article s/2004/05/17/people/genealogy/2003/gen011803.txt_ (http://www.andalusiastarnews.com/articles/2004/05/17/people/genealogy/2003/gen011803.txt) Joel Biggs was in county by the early 1820sBy Curtis Thomasson Joel Biggs, a native of Virginia, was the progenitor of the Biggs descendants who have lived in Covington County. He was born circa 1780 in Brunswick County, Virginia, and was in South Alabama before Covington County was formed in 1821. One researcher found him to be in the Mobile District before 1818. He was in this county by 1824, since during that year he was an Ensign for Beat One Company, Covington County, Battalion, 8th Brigade, 4th Division of the Alabama Militia. Joel was married to Elizabeth Ann Ramer during the 1820s. She was most likely the daughter of John and Barbary Ramer, natives of North Carolina and Pennsylvania respectively, who were living next door to Joel and Elizabeth in 1850. Based on census records, Elizabeth appears to have been born circa 1800 in South Carolina. She was probably the Eliza A. Biggs who was identified in 1830 as owning one slave. In the 1850 census, Joel was listed at 70 years of age and being blind and Elizabeth, at 60 years. (Based on other censuses, she was probably only about 50 years old at the time.) The couple had at least three sons born to them. The names of two are not known at this time, but one named William H. was born in 1829. Since he is known to have remained in Covington County, it is his descendants that this writing will feature. Joel died before 1860, and Elizabeth was residing in the home of their son, William, in that year. Elizabeth died after 1880 and was buried beside Joel's grave in the Biggs Family Cemetery, located near Dunn's Crossing north of Gantt. (This cemetery is probably the one known currently as the Carter Cemetery, located on the old Sims Bridge Road near the Coldwater Church.) William was born in Covington County and grew up probably in the Gantt area. He would most likely have farmed with his father. When the 1850 census was taken, he was residing in the home of Martin Ramer who was probably his mother's brother. He was 21 years of age and listed as a farmer. Around 1854, William H. was married to Susannah Carter, the daughter of another pioneer family in the Gantt area. They had the following seven children: John William, b. 1855, d. before 1930, m. 1883 Christine "Christi" Sorrells; James Seaborn, b. 1858, m. Tempy E. Harrelson; George W., b. ca 1863, m. Elizabeth Gilmore; Henry M., b. 1865, d. 1930, m. Caroline "Carrie" Sorrells; Caroline ? Chrischansy, b. 1867, m. Lewis Bozeman; Jonathan M., b. 1874; and Narcissa C. "Addie," b. 1878, m. ? Gay. William H. homesteaded 85 acres of land in 1867 in the Gantt township. In 1886, he homesteaded an additional 85 acres in the same area. This is where he would have settled and reared the above children. Susannah died circa 1888 and was buried in the Biggs Cemetery. Following her death, William was married in 1890 to Carrie Simmons who was born in 1858. The oldest son, John William, was married on Christmas Day in 1883 in Crenshaw County to Christine Sorrels who was born in 1864. They reared the following children: William, b. 1885; Olin, b. 1886, m. Mary S. Mitchell; Henry Bishop, b. 1892, d. 1982, m. Rosa "Rosie" Almere Scroggins; Hubbard, b. ca 1893; Maude, b. 1894; Ida Mae, b. 1895, d. 1974, m. Eli L. "Bose" Scroggins; Albert, b. 1901; Alice, b. 1903; Walter, b. ca 1905; and Rosa, b. ca 1906, m. Dewey Grice. The next son, James Seaborn, was married to Tempy E. Harrelson, daughter of Jonathan and Mary Jane (Jones) Harrelson. They were known to have had one daughter, Gertrude, who was born in 1901 in Covington County. James homesteaded 38 acres of land in the Gantt township in 1896. Another son, Henry M., and his wife Caroline Sorrells, had the following four children: Thomas Henry "Tom," b. 1888, d. 1963, m. 1913 Rebecca "Becky" A. Scroggins; Liza, b. 1904; Lee, b. 1908; and Nobie, b. 1904, m. George Burke; and Don, b. unknown. No additional information is readily available on the other children of William and Susannah Biggs. However, in the next few paragraphs, several of their grandchildren's families will be outlined. The grandchildren of John William Biggs include the children of Henry Bishop and his wife, Rosie (Scroggins), daughter of Columbus Wright "Brisk" and Caroline (Mitchell) Scroggins: Mary Lee, b. 1915, d. 1991, m. Willie J. "Will" Batson; John Henry, b.&d. 1919; John, b. 1921, d. 1973, m. Merle Lee Holloway; Frank, b. 1923, d. 1945, single; Charlie Ray, b. 1928, d. 1995, m. Elizabeth Ann Holloway; Vester, b. 1931, m. Quennel Windham; and Callie Mae, b. 1935, d. 2002, m. Junior Steele. They also include the daughter of Ida Mae Biggs and her second husband, William D. Henderson, Elizabeth Hender-son, who married Alma Lonnie "Jack" Turberville and had four children. The grandchildren of Henry M. Biggs include the children of Thomas Henry Biggs and his wife, Rebecca A. Scroggins, sister to Rosie: William Sidney, b. 1918, d. 1997, m. Mary Jewell Moore; Marion Burnett, b. 1920, d. 1959; Fred, b. 1922, d. 1980, m. (1) Nina Mae Aughtman (2) Annie Jo Wright; Bertha Mae, b. 1925, d. 1984, m. Alfred L. Scroggins; Infant, b.&d. 1927; Harold, b. 1929, d. 1992, m. Mary Alice Ballard; and Farrell, b. 1929, d. 1990, m. (1) Margaret Evelyn Wise Hall (2) Demovel "Bobbie" Armstrong (3) Margaret Green. They further include the son of Nobie Biggs and her husband, George Burke, Eddie Lou Burke, b. 1934, m. Foy B. Scroggins. Needless to say, there were many descendants from Joel Biggs to reside in Covington County and to spread to other states. Research on this family continues. Appreciation is expressed to Frances Wheeler who shared her genealogical records on this family. Anyone who might have corrections or additions to the above is requested to contact Curtis Thomasson at 21361 Rabren Road, Andalusia, AL 36420 or Email: _chthom@alaweb.com_ (mailto:chthom@alaweb.com)

    3. Kate, I have been checking out some postings on the Oxley surname on genforum, and there is a posting from back in 1999 that states that Aaron & Rosanna Oxley's daughter married Josiah Biggs. The daughter's first name is unknown. I will do some more searching, and see if I can come up with anything else. I have never found our Josiah Biggs, Sr. on a census earlier than 1820, have you? Debbie ----Original Message Follows---- From: ross kate <jkross4@yahoo.com> To: BIGGS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [BIGGS] wife of Josiah Biggs Sr/Clinton Co., Oh - Warren Co., IN Date: Tue, 8 Jun 2004 15:04:26 -0700 (PDT) Josiah Biggs' researchers: Sometime ago I was reading the History of Clinton Co., Ohio, and came across a reference to Josiah Biggs' as administrator to will of Aaron Oxley. I started looking at Oxley research, and found the following from Notices From the Western Star, Lebanon, Warren County, Ohio by Blanche Collins, p. 78: "Legal claims against the estate of Aaron Oxley, dec'd, late of Vernon twp, Clinton county. Josiah biggs, Adm., 19 Feb. 1821". I found Oxley researcher Steve Neighbors gedcom at WorldConnect which stated that Josiah Biggs' married a daughter of Aaron Oxley and wife Rosanna. I contacted Steve he said he got the information from Oxley researcher George McKee, who I contacted. He said the information came from Patti O'Dell. I e.mailed her without receiving a reply. George McKee said that these people were Quaker or had Quaker ties. I couldn't find them listed in Hinshaws Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy, 1750-1930 in Loudoun Co., Fairfax MM, or in any Clinton Co., Quaker meetings. There were early Oxley Quakers in Chester Co., Pa, which could be related. Patricia C. O'Dell has written a book, Coombs and allied families, included Combs, Brabham, Dalrymple, Lullen and Oxley. This is available at LDS, # 9882134. I haven't read it yet. Aaron Oxley married Rosanna; death, Oct 1820, Clinton Co., Ohio. His parents were John and Catherine Lewis? Oxley of Loudon Co., Va. John's parents were Henry and Mary Everrit Oxley. Henry was b. 16 Jun 1697; death bef. 1761, Hunterdon Co., NJ. Information I received from Alice Jacober, Biggs' researcher, descendant of Reuben Biggs through second wife Olive Wilson in the 1980s, told me that Josiah's wife was named Elizabeth. Anyway, I have no proof at this time, but I believe we may have found the wife of Josiah Biggs. If any of you are able to establish proof, please post to us.
