    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/WCE.2ACIB/1103.4 Message Board Post: I can not directly identify your Robert Biggs, but it does look like he belongs within the family of Robert Biggs and Jane Miller Biggs, most likely he is a grandson. From the census of 1830 and 1840 I see he was living in Lewis township, Clay county Indiana. That township is in the southwest part of Clay county close to both Vigo and Sullivan counties. Also living there were brothers William, Nicholas and Henry Crist. The Crists all married daughters of Robert and Jane Miller Biggs. Andrew Biggs, a son of Robert and Jane Miller Biggs, married Elizabeth Crist, a sister of William, Nicholas and Henry. All of these people are buried in the Friendly Grove Cemetery adjoining the Friendly Grove Baptist Church in Lewis township in Clay County. Andrew Biggs and Elizabeth Crist were married 01 Nov 1802 in Shelby county Kentucky. I belive they are listed in the Scott Co. Ky 1810 census and the 1820 Shelby Co. KY census. In 1830 Andrew Biggs was in Montgomery county Indiana along with son in law, Robert Richey. In 1840 Andrew Biggs is in Pierson township, Vigo county and Robert Richey/Ritchey is in Sullivan county. Pierson township Vigo county adjoins Lewis township Clay county. Robert Biggs, Andrew Biggs, the Crists and Robert Richey were all living fairly close together. The information that Andy found said that Robert Biggs was a son of John Biggs and that may be correct but if you have not done so, I sure would check out Andrew and Elizabeth Crist Biggs. If you have not checked Vigo county records I would suggest writting or calling the library at Terra Haute, http://www.vigo.lib.in.us/ , They have a very good genealogy department with many area records. In particular ask if they have a Biggs family genealogy file. Also you might check with the Vigo County Court House for probate records for Andrew Biggs and Elizabeth Crist Biggs. My information is that Andrew died between 1840 and 1850 and Elizabeth died 1847. Good Luck, Warren

    2. From _Horace Bell, Reminiscences, 1850s_ (http://www.ancestry.com/search/srrd.asp?rd=db&dbid=4181) (narrative accounts from the life of a California soldier and businessman) Reminiscences of a ranger; or, Early times in southern California. CHAPTER II. page 37 On the day following my arrival in this famed city of the South, then by some designated "the City of Vineyards," I betook myself to the city barber, Peter Biggs by name, afterward and during the days of the great sectional strife known as the "Black Democrat." "Don Pedro," so styled by his Mexican friends, was a famous character, and the writer proposes to do his best in conferring the meed of immortality where it so justly belongs, in trying to do justice to the memory of this illustrious and necessary appendage to Los Angeles society, who, for the period of a quarter of a century, or more, certainly made himself known and felt in certain quarters of this eminently virtuous community. Pete advertised in the Star to "shave and shampoo, wait on the gentlemen, run errands, and make himself generally useful." Pete was a Virginian, so he informed me while for the first time submitting to his barberous manipulations, and came here as the servant of Captain A. J. Smith, of the dragoons, afterwards famed as General commanding the 16th army corps of Sherman's army; that he had made a great deal of money in various speculations; that he had married a Spanish lady; that the community, "'specially de ladies and gentlemen," could by no means get along without him. He said he knew all of the ladies, and sometimes carried messages from gentlemen to them, and was always ready and more than happy to introduce a stranger to female society, and to act as interpreter when occasion demanded. At this point Pete came to a period, seemingly anticipating that the author would make some pertinent remark; failing in which, Pete broke the embarrassing silence by saying: "Would ye like to make de 'quaintance of some of de ladies?" I thereupon informed him that I had friends here who would in all probability introduce me into such female society as would be proper for one of my youth and inexperience to know, and at the same time informed him who my friends were, at which Pete seemed for a moment "run chock-a-block," but soon rallied and said: "You see I doesn't mean ladies ob dat high-up class; I means de kind ob ladies dat's always anxious to make de 'quaintance ob strangers; 'specially dose dats got plenty ob de spondulix." CHAPTER IV. page 80 A requisition was accordingly made on the tonsorial skill of Peter Biggs, who, in the presence of the Court, Jury and congregated crowd of gamblers and hard cases, proceeded to denude the horrid creature of every hair, from his jaw-bones to the root of his tail, leaving him as sleek and smooth as the hairless dog Don˜a Concha. CHAPTER VI. page 102 Peter Biggs was in his glory on that election day. His shop and its various branches were crowded all day.

    2. I am so sorry that everyone is having to get all of these stupid things.........I am reporting everyone of them to abuse at rootsweb, but lately it doesn't seem to be helping. I will continue, but the alternative is to restrict the list and I really hate to do that. I am going to continue to see if there are newer ways to help block this kind of thing without penalizing our group. Thanks again for your patience and understanding!!! Sincerely, Bev

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WCE.2ACIB/1103.3.1.1 Message Board Post: It was not my intention to suggest that the Rev War patriot Robert Biggs, b ca 1753 or whatever, was the same man as your Robert, who, as your query had indicated, was born sometime in the early 1800's. The Rev patriot Robert Biggs is the one who married Jane Miller. A study of their descendancy chart at the WorldConnect Project, and a tracking of their descendants from KY up to IN should convince you that this Rev patriot Robert Biggs, who died in Clark Co IN, was an ancestor of your Robert who married Susan and lived in Vigo Co IN. Documentation is needed, of course, but it looks highly likely to me that Robert and "Susannah" are your Robert and Susan, that they married in Spencer Co KY within a couple years of the marriage of Elizabeth Biggs and Robert Richey, and that the two couples came up to Vigo Co IN and settled close to each other. They're very close neighbors on the census. Robert Biggs and Elizabeth (Biggs) Richey were probably either brother and sister or first cousins. The WorldConnect Project indicates Elizabeth was a first cousin of the Robert who married "Susannah" Compton. Whether they were siblings or cousins is a problem that needs to be researched and verified. Check with the WorldConnect submitter to see the proof. The WorldConnect submission birth date for Robert and your birth date for him conflict, and each needs to be verified to determine whether or not they're two different men. (As I say, I doubt if they are.) Your Robert Biggs and his neighbor Mrs. Elizabeth Richey were, in my opinion, almost certainly grandchildren of Robert Biggs (Rev patriot)and Jane (Miller) Biggs of Clark Co IN. According to the WorldConnect Project, Robert who married "Susannah" was the son of John, and Elizabeth Richey was the daughter of John's brother Andrew. John and Andrew were sons of Robert Biggs and Jane (Miller) Biggs. Contact the many folks involved with this family and see what they have to say. Their names and addresses are at the WorldConnect Project, and at the Biggs and Crist Family Genealogy Forums. WorldConnect is found by clicking "Searches" at the top of these Rootsweb pages. A web site for the cemetery that Robert and Jane (Miller) Biggs are buried in in Clark Co IN said that Robert had lived in Westmoreland Co PA before going to Shelby Co KY and later to Clark Co IN. (Shelby Co KY borders Spencer Co KY.) Good luck.

A query at Richey Gen Forum claims the latter couple are Robert Richey and Elizabeth Biggs. Robert and Susannah might be Robert and Susan even though the WorldConnect submission shows a different birth date than you have for him. See also queries re Spencer Co KY at the Crist Gen Forum. Biggs family may have come to Sullivan Co IN before Vigo, so there could be early records there.

Check the submissions on Robert Biggs and spouse Jane Miller. Note their son John's son Robert who married Susannah Compton. Close in birth year, but dates don't match. One of your Robert and Susan's close neighbors in Vigo County was Robert Richey, whose wife was Elizabeth Biggs, b KY 1807. Possibly Elizabeth is Robert's sister. Her parents are shown as Andrew and Elizabeth Crist. Rachel Biggs married Nicholas Crist in Vigo County before 1850. Looks like there were a few Biggs-Crist marriages in Spencer Co KY.
