Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WCE.2ACIB/1114 Message Board Post: Jacob Moon "Jake" Biggs (1834-1919), son of William L. Biggs (1810-1850) and Catherine "Kate" Lipscomb (1808-1842), married 1) Annamelia Rinehart (1830-1878), 8 ch., and 2) Maria (Kight) Sellen (1842-1937), 1 ch. Kate Lipscomb was daughter of Ambrose Lipscomb (1762-1841) and Winifred Mardis (c.1768-1847). She and William L. Biggs had 5 children: 1) Jacob Moon Biggs, 2) Ambrose Lipscomb Biggs (1836-1873), 3) Winifred Mardis Biggs (1838-c.1867), who married John W. Harvey and had sons Whittington and Lucian, 4) Joseph Harrison Biggs (1840-1873), and 5) Gordon Upton Biggs (b. & d. 1842), who apparently died at birth along with his mother. The late Karl K. Gower, a great grandson of Jake Biggs and a prodigious early researcher of the Biggs family, once gave me copies of three early Biggs letters and, before he died, sent me a list of all the early letters in his possession. Here is the list: "1. 28 Mar. 1853 to Jacob Moon Biggs from his sister Winifred Biggs. 2. 5 April 1860 to Jacob Moon Biggs from his cousin William F. Biggs. 3. 1 Dec. 1863 to Anamelia and Jacob Biggs, answer to be addressed to Rowlesburg, Preston County, West Virginia to cousin David Nine. 4. 15 Sept. 1864 to Anamelia Biggs from cousin David Nine, Jr. 5. 6 Jan. 1863 to Jacob Biggs from brother Joseph Biggs & Salome Biggs, Rowlesburg. 6. 9 July 1859 to Jacob Biggs from brother W. F. Biggs, Ryan's Glade. 7. 2 Mar. 1866 to Jacob Biggs from Mary Biggs. 8. 9 Feb. 1866 to Anamelia Biggs from Christian Nine, no address. 9. 14 Nov. 1872 to Hester Biggs from Mary Biggs, cousin. 10. 17 Feb. 1878 to Hester Biggs, cousin, from John A. Staup, Blissfield, Michigan. 11. 26 Jan. 1873 to Anamelia & Jacob Biggs from cousin Elias & Catherine Nine, Rowlesburg, Cranberry Summit, West Virginia. 12. 18 Mar. 1855 to Jacob Biggs from Elias Ervin, friend. 13. 4 Mar. 1861 to Jacob Biggs from cousin Emily Biggs. 14. 20 Jan. 1866 to Jacob Biggs from T. F. Hebb, Rowlesburg, West Virginia." This was from Thornton F. Hebb (1822-1911), whose second wife Mary Ann Lipscomb was my great aunt. I have copies of letters 1, 2 and 14. I would love to read them all - but of VERY special interest to me is letter 5. Joseph Harrison Biggs married 1) c.1862 Salome Jane Weimer (1840-1864), who died in childbirth along with her daughter Alice Salome, 2) 1870 Sarah A. Henderson (c.1853-before 1930). They had one daughter Juretta Biggs (1872-?), who married Fletcher Eugene Dawson. Please respond if you have copies of these letters or know of someone who does. Jeff Lipscomb

Thanks William. I always thought it was "International" as you state, but I now see several chapter websites using "Independent", even this one: http://www.ioof.org/ . Does that mean they are not associated with the international organization? My interest is that my Dad was a member in the 1920s. To clarify my earlier response on the founding of the IOOF, it started in Great Britain in the 1700s, and the first chapter in the USA was organized in Baltimore in 1819. Hi Max-- IOOF is the International Order of Odd Fellows
Wow! I appreciate yalls Q and A on this subject. I did not know that symbol, but had heard of the Order of Odd fellows, though I did not know what they stood for. Very honorable men. Thank yall very much, not a day goes by without learning something. "Tip Toe through the tullips, careful not to trip over the daisies, only to stop and smell the roses." -Briana Griffin Etie
Not weird, maybe just "odd"! The IOOF is the International (or Independent) Order of Odd Fellows, a large fraternal organization started in the U.S. in 1819. The 3 rings probably have F, L and T inside, standing for Friendship, Love, and Truth as unbroken and linked together. Here's a link with a brief description: http://www.ioof.org/ I don't think there's any connection between the IOOF and the other grave under the house.
