Surnames: BIGGS Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WCE.2ACIB/902.1.2.1 Message Board Post: Thanks for the posting. Although my mother was proud of being a BIGGS I have very little information about them. I know my Gt Grandfather was a Richard BIGGS born 28 Feb 1848 in Bisley. I got his Birth certificate which gave his father's name as Richard BIGGS. Richard (the son) has his occupation as Policeman on the Birth cert. of my Gt Grandfather in 1848 but my investigation to the Police for the area at that time do not show him listed at all. At the time of Richard' (the son) wedding in 1847 (less than 9 months before!) he was listed as a butcher in Avening and that his father (also Richard) was a farmer. Probably in the same area. Richard (the son) married a Mary TOWNSEND. She being the daughter of Charles & Ellen. Charles was a Baker. I know next to nothing about about that generation otherwise. Richard & Mary had a son Richard Ambrey BIGGS who became a railway engine driver. This is what brough him to Wales working "new" raliway routes. He married a Margaret Ann Bartlett in Neath in 1874 and retired to the Rhondda (Treherbert) where many of the family were. I believe many of the BIGGS family worked for the railways and relatives of RA also worked out of Swindon. They got jobs for other members of the father and the story is that "they were quite senior". Although not yet proved I believe that RA had siblings Mary E (b abt 1858), Thomas (b abt 1863), George (b 1850) and Sarah Celia (b abt 1857) This is based on possible census entries for Mary (nee TOWNSEND) Possible entry for Mary Biggs in 1881 census 52, Constellation Street, Roath is a widow Mary Biggs b.abt.1824 in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire. She is with two unmarried children: Mary E. Biggs b. abt 1858 in Chepstow and Thomas b. abt. 1863 in Roath. Possible entry for Mary Biggs in 1901 Mary Biggs is still in Roath in 1901 aged 76. Her son Thomas aged 37 is also in Roath at a different address with wife Elizabeth aged 35 and children Thomas 12, Elizabeth 9, Archibald 4 and Christopher 2. If anything rings a bell for you please let me know. Kerry

Surnames: BIGGS Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WCE.2ACIB/902.1.2 Message Board Post: Biggs is interesting - I have Biggs in my family tree - no Richard, but those I have come from Kemble, very close to Bisley. One of my Coxes (George Cox) married Eliza Biggs in 1876 - her parents were William and Ann (nee Lock) and they had the following kids - Thomas (b c1842), John (b c1844), Daniel (b c1846), Jacob and Esau (b c1848) [I assume these are twins] - from the 1871 census it looks as though there was a William born around 1852 as well. there's also Elizabeth, whom I assume to be William's mother, born c1787. An 1871 census entry shows a John Biggs from Kemble (b c1845) marrying Ellen (b c1846) from Ashton Keynes. They had Sarah born in 1871 - I imagine this is the same John Biggs above. Any connection? cheers Danny

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Biggs Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WCE.2ACIB/1117 Message Board Post: Hi there, I'm currently doing some research on the a lady named ELiza Louisa Emmerson and her husband Thomas Emmerson who both died in 1854. On their deaths their estate was passed to Eliza's niece, Henriette Collins Biggs, wife of Charles Biggs. Eliza Louisa Emmerson is interesting as she was the patron to the poet John CLare and many of his letters to her are missing. I'm currently doing a dissertation on this subject and after exhausted all other possibilities the only hope I have of finding any correspondence between Clare and Emmerson lies in their connection to the Biggs. Any help out there would be much appreciated.
