    1. [BIGAMY] How to Find the "Other" woman in a Bigamy case
    2. Wendy Watkins
    3. Hi Everyone, I just found information that verified a family story that my grandfather was a bigamist. I received papers from the county prosecutor's office of an exact date, crime, sentencing and prison. I also found to short newspaper pieces about him as well. Ok, my question is how can I go about finding out who the other woman was without having an exact marriage date? Also, can anyone suggest where else I can look for information on this. This happened in Warren County NJ and his name was LEWIS WESLEY WATKINS from Elizabeth, NJ. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! Sincerely, Wendy Watkins

    2. Thank you Sherri!  I do have the name of a researcher who is familiar with the records. Now that I have narrowed down the time period of the infraction, she may have a better chance of finding the individual. Now that Moundsville is open for tours, I hope to go see my ancestors cell.  Is that weird (smile)? Were these set by the state? Was this considered a state or federal crime? I have an ancestor who went from Ohio, to Kentucky, to Illinois, and supposedly spent time in Moundsville Prison (WV) for bigamy. Might this be because she/they crossed state lines? Any idea on how to find the sentencing? Might this be with the prison records ( Moundsville is now closed, but the records were sent to the state archives.) Thanks! 1. [BIGAMY] Bigamy research and sentencing guidelines
    2. Good Evening Group, I just found this listserv last night. I have a female bigamist in my family, but I do not know her name. It was such a scandal, that no one would talk about it and everyone who could give me information is gone. The information I have is based on my mothers visit as a child to the outside of Moundsville Prison (WVA) somewhere between 1932-1938. The woman behind bars was referred to as "my aunt" by my grandmother. This has helped to narrow the filed. Does anyone have ideas as to how to search records? I have a researcher in West Virginia who will search names for me within the prison records, but I need to narrow the field for her to search. Since the woman went to Moundsville, it was a federal offense. I have information of someone in my tree with a different surname than her children, who had lived in Ohio and then went to Pennsylvania. Does anyone have an idea of how long she may have been sentenced for her infraction in the 1920's-30's? Am I an odd bird in seeking out the bigamist? Thanks for your thoughts and input! David

    2. wow david! you're not odd at all...that's what genealogy is all about...the skeletons, at least to me, make it that much more interesting...i've got a guy in PA who was an upstanding individual -or so it seemed but i found him with another family in IL at the same time...just can't quite put all the pieces of the puzzle together yet... happy trails to you! 1. [BIGAMY] Might these census records indicate bigamy?
    2. Wanda McGee
    3. Here is a situation that has me stumped. If I understood polygamy better, it might help. These questions arose while I was reviewing the U.S. Census for 1840, 1850, and 1860. Does the following indicate polygamy, pandemic, or something else? What other questions should I be asking myself to determine the answer? (My primary interest is in Paul's son, William H. Spears, 2, who was in Greenup, KY, in 1850.) 1840 U.S. Census A Paul Spears (30-40) lived in Greenup Co., KY with two girls (under 5) and one woman (20-30). Across the river in Union Twp., Lawrence Co., OH, there was a second Paul Spears (30-40). His household was made up of two boys (under 5), two girls (5-10 and 10-15), and a woman (20-30). Two other Spears families (Benjamin, 20-30 and William, 30-40) were in Paul's Ohio neighborhood. The three Spears in Ohio were in Agriculture. 1850 U.S. Census Paul Spears in District #2, Greenup, KY (41) was listed as a shoemaker born in VA. Members of his household were Patsy, 35, born in VA; Dolly, 14, born in KY; Catherine, 12, born in VA; John 9, born in KY; Nancy, 6; Isaac, 4; and William H., 2. The three youngest were born in OH. In Windsor Twp., Lawrence Co., OH, there were two Spears families living close together: Peter Spears (32, a farmer) and Paul Spears (40, born in VA, with no occupation listed). Paul's family consisted of Peggy, 36; John, 20; James, 19; Elizabeth, 17; Henry, 12; Polly, 9; Andrew, 8; Louisa, 6; and William, 3. Peggy, John, Henry, Polly, and Andrew could not read and write. Everyone except Paul was born in Ohio. 1860 Census No Paul Spears/Speers/Spear/Speer or family members as an intact group in Greenup, KY or Lawrence Co., OH (or in the U.S., for that matter) Peter Spears, above, and his family were still in Lawrence Co., OH. 1870 Census and beyond No Paul (or Peter) Spears/Speers/Spear/Speer, white, in the right age group, listed in the U.S. Census.

    2. Hello, I hope that someone is out there to receive this email. My gr grandfather was said to have been a Bigamist. His name was Elijah Cross bn circa 1888 in Alabama. I have a certified copy of his death certificate and he died in Alabama. Talk has it that he died while in Alabama with one wife and the Ohio wife found out about his death and showed up for the funeral service and disrupted things. As the talk goes on, my gr grandfather also had another Ohio wife in Cleveland. I'm trying to figure out the best why for this to be documented, I have only gotten the marriage license for one of the marriages and desire to verify the others. Any tips, suggestions, etc would be greatly appreciated. Terri Cross Springfield, Ohio A Happy Hunter
