Hello, My husband's heritage is German from Russia. The above ancestor left Baden, Sim (?) in Germany in 1767 and settled in Russia at just about the same time as other Bieber's were coming to America. The information was taken from the original settler's list of Rothammel, a Catholic colony in the Volga area of Russia. (The information was probably given in German, & written down in old style Russian. It was translated back to German and then into English so may not be correct spellings.) His wife was Anna Elisabetha b. abt 1736, and children were Heinrich b. abt 1759 and Franz Jacob b. abt 1766. (The following info was taken from the 1798 census of Rothammel.) Katharina may have been his daughter. She moved from Rothammel to the village of Dehler (Beresovka) in 1789. Johannes may have been his son and moved to Brabander (Kazitskaya) in 1793. Heinrich married Maria Magdalena Monschader (Monschauer) and had sons, Martin, Nikolaus, Josef, and a daughter, Maria. Does anyone have info on this family? Barbara Bretz

Martin Mrs. Sophia Martin, wife of Henry Martin, the well known furniture dealer of Waukon, died last Monday morning, about five o'clock, of typhoid fever. Mrs. Martin had been ill for several days, but was feeling so much more comfortable as to lead the anxious watchers at her bedside to believe that she would recover; but their hopes were deluded, for in a short time she was a corpse. The deceased was a daughter of the late Peter Bieber, Sr., and was born in Alsace, Germany, May 9, 1851. She came to America with her parents when but a little child, and grew to womanhood in this country. She was married to Mr. Martin at Lansing, on the 29th day of July, 1872, and became a resident of Waukon between five and six years ago. She was a lady of kind and gentle disposition, and made fast friends of those with whom she became acquainted. Four children were the fruits of her married life, two of whom, aged four and nine years, are yet living. Mrs. Martin was truly a good woman, an affectionate and devoted wife and mother, and by her death the home is indeed made desolate. Her husband and the little motherless children have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community. The funeral takes place at nine o'clock this morning, and the remains will be taken for interment to the Norwegian cemetery in Center township.

Hi Pat, Years ago (1978) I bought one of those books that have the addresses of people all over the country with the Bieber surname and sent out a form letter ... I didn't have any luck with it except for a letter from a man in Illinois who was descended from a George Bieber. George had immigrated in 1740 via the Dutch Ship "Friendship" to New York ... He gave me some interesting tidbits about the Biebers - including the fact that a Colonel George Bieber was an aide-de-camp and personal confidant of General George Washington, had fought at Brandywine, and had led the local calvary militia in a charge which won the day for the colonials .... Gerald Bieber also wrote that Bieber derives from the Anglicanization/Germanization of the french name de Beauvoir - meaning one who is from the town of Beauvoir ... "Following the Richelieu massacre of Huguenots (trapped in their church during services and methodically hacked to pieces by a company of Richelieu's men) a few escaped and warned others in town with some escaping to: Germany - Alsace/Lorraine and N. Central Area - Biebers Boer Africa - de Bevors England - Beavers Russia - have been unable to trace - possibly de Borscht!!!" (I thought that was funny and couldn't resist leaving that in!) He also told me about a book titled "The Bieber-Beaver Family," written by Rev. James Beaver of Reading, PA, published in 1947 ... I found a copy in the Harrisburg Library and copied a few pages ... Since our Jacob Bieber immigrated in 1850, the Biebers in the book were way to early, but we found it interesting .... Chapter 1 was titled "The Original Family Name" and the first page gave a lot of detail about the Huguenot origin of the name which Gerald Bieber had summarized nicely ... This doesn't really relate to your comment about whether Bieber is a common name over there, but I thought I'd pass it on - for what it's worth ...
