Do you have any information about Martha Bidgood, b. ca1780 in Isle of Wight, Va. She married William Jordan in 1797 and died in 1805. I am looking for her parentage. Hi Frank, Thank you for your Email. Not a great deal on the parents of Martha Bidgood. The only thing that might relate is that the Isle of Wight Co. VA Slave Schedule 1782 contains 10 BIDGOOD names including Martha Bidgood. No other information. Source [email protected] in 2001. I gather that slaves often took the surname of their owner, so it is possible that many of these named people were from the same estate. I do have a white Bidgood family who had slaves. Apparently slaves were encouraged to have children since these became the property of the owner. I do not think that marriage was a a pre-requisite or even common for the slaves. However this is outside my area of expertise so please try and confirm from other sources. It would be interesting to see if William and Martha show up on a census record as black. Hope this helps, and please keep me up dated if you find anything further. At present all I have on the family is the marriage, and the birth of the son John.
