I have his parents as George Adams and Elizabeth Wilson. The story goes that he was raised by a family called Bibbie or Bibby in Lanrkshire, near Glasgow, Scotland. He used the name Adams in Scotland, all his children were born Adams, but for some reason he took the name Bibbie (with varying spellings) when he emigrated to the USA. Now Bibby, whatever the spelling, is a very uncommon name in Scotland. The only family I know of in Lanarkshire is that of Thomas Bibby, who lived there from at least 1823, although his origins were in Lancashire, England. Thomas had 2 wives, Margaret Blackwood who died in 1833 and then Janet Turnbull (or Trumble). There were 6 children in total, 2 of whom emigrated to Australia and 4 to Wisconsin, all in the 1850s and early 60s. Thomas died in 1856 on a visit to Wisconsin, but his widow lived on in Holytown until 1868. There is no proof that this is the family that “adopted” George Adams, but the dates and places fit. Don’t worry too much about the spelling of the name; things weren’t fixed in those days, especially seeing Scotland had (and still has) different spelling rules to England. One of the sons is on the ship’s list to Australia as “Bebbie”. I do not know if George had any genuine brothers or sisters, but I know of all his “adopted” Bibby siblings. You can find the stories of the Wisconsin ones at: www.rootsweb.com/~witrempe/genealogies/genealogies.htm Let me know if you want any more. John Bibby Wolverhampton, England
