Author: gm4858 Surnames: Bibby, McLaughlin Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bibby/128.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Neal and Margaret (Bibby) McLaughlin Neal McLaughlin (Also spelt, Mc Laughlin) was born on the September 15, 1881 (another source lists October 17, 1881.) His place of birth was the town of Moville, specifically the Village of Clare, a few miles south of Moville in County Donegal, Ireland. His parents were Francis and Catherine (maiden name Harkin or Harrigan) The McLaughlin's were said to have been cattle farmers. Presumably Neal's older brother inherited his father's farm, which was the custom. Neal went to Scotland to seek employment. Glasgow, Scotland is about 100 miles northeast of Moville across the North Channel. (Neal was 5' 8" tall, weight 150 lb. and he had black hair and brown eyes.) It was in Scotland that Neal met and eventually married Margaret Bibby. In 1980 I was interested in doing some research on my ancestry and my wife and I visited my aunt, Margaret McLaughlin. Over lunch and afterwards she told me something about my grandparents and the little she knew about my great-grandfather George Adams Bibby. She said that my grandmother (her mother) Margaret Bibby was (circa 1882) in Pennsylvania in a town that sounded like Housedale. Subsequently I surmised Houtzdale, PA 16651. She said her father's name was George Adams Bibby . Aunt Margaret was unclear why he had two last names. Apparently my grandmother had used the last name of Bibby exclusively. Margaret said that George was either Scottish or English and that he had moved the family to Pennsylvania where he managed a coal mine. At some point my grandmother went back to Scotland. She would have been a young girl so I presume that her mother brought her back to Scotland. My Aunt Margaret didn't know much about her grand-father George Adams Bibby. A later correspondences (posted at ancestry.com)indicates he was married before and had another family. And, as a child he may have been taken in and raised by another family in Scotland named Bibby and subsequently took on their last name too. Neal McLaughlin met Margaret Bibby (Adams,) they were married and resided in Teddystone, Scotland for a time. On May 10, 1912 Neal departed Scotland from Glasgow aboard the ship Parisian bound for the United States. He arrived at the Port of Boston on May 23. My grandmother Margaret (Bibby,) who was pregnant with Catherine their second child, stayed behind in Scotland and followed him later. My father George was the first of their seven children born in America. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
