Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bibby/128.3.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello again, I have a record in my files of George Adams ( using Bibby sur-name) on Dec. 23, 1911 from Glasgow, Scotland on the S.S. Ionia Line #6, last residence Sarkall, sailing to Smoke Run, Pa. ( this is the Clearfield Co. area) his nearest relative was Mrs. Walker from Newarthille, Scotland. I know this is his sister. He must have been going to the home of his parents George Adams Bibby & Catherine Dryburgh Bibby. This is possibly the time that his daughter Margaret McLaughlin came to the states although I did not locate her on the ship's listing. I somehow have lost some of my files, deleted from my records on the family tree, and was not aware of it until just now as I began to check for your branch of the family. I have conflicting dates, perhaps you can let me know if they are correct. Margaret Higgens, wife of George Adams, died in Scotland, 10 Jan. 1927, age 57, making birth as 1870. But their daughter Margaret McLaughlin is listed as born 1882 ??? I have a photo of the grave marker in Scotland that list his name as George Bibbie Adams, strange?? I have Margaret F. McLaughlin, your aunt, as being born in 1910 and died in 1991, is this correct?? I have no place marked as to the source. I also have a photo of your father's grave marker, George J. McLaughlin, born July 26, 1914 died April 24, 1991. Do you live in Mass.? Perhaps a visit to the cemetery will confirm dates of the McLaughlin family's deaths. Thank you for replies. Author: dStubbles5 Surnames: Bibby, Adams, McLaughlin Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bibby/128.3.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Bibby relative!! Your email was exciting. It does, unfortunately, not give me much more than I have but does confirm and help to establish, or document, our ancestor George Adams Bibby's history. Perhaps we shall never know who the Adams family were or why the Bibbys "took him in" but that is indeed the story that has been passed down through this branch of the family. Isn't it strange that when Margaret Bibby came to the U.S. that she did not be in touch with her grandfather in Clearfield Co., Pa. I have never seen anything that shows that the two families were ever together, the McLaughlins & Bibbys. I did find an old photo in my grandparent's stuff that showed a grave marker in Scotland with grandfather's brother George's name as George Adams. Also all the sons of George Adams Bibby used the Adams name as a middle name so they kept it in the family. My grandfather, the only one born after they came to the U.S. he never had the Adams name included in his records.! I am happy to be in touch with another Bibby relative, please keep in touch and feel free to contact me with any info. I have more on the Bibbys and will be happy to share and compare. I have been in touch with another McLaughlin relative who has has sent me photos of the McLaughlin grave markers. Your info. will add to this branch, again thanks so much for your reply. Author: gm4858 Surnames: Bibby, McLaughlin Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bibby/128.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Neal and Margaret (Bibby) McLaughlin Neal McLaughlin (Also spelt, Mc Laughlin) was born on the September 15, 1881 (another source lists October 17, 1881.) His place of birth was the town of Moville, specifically the Village of Clare, a few miles south of Moville in County Donegal, Ireland. His parents were Francis and Catherine (maiden name Harkin or Harrigan) The McLaughlin's were said to have been cattle farmers. Presumably Neal's older brother inherited his father's farm, which was the custom. Neal went to Scotland to seek employment. Glasgow, Scotland is about 100 miles northeast of Moville across the North Channel. (Neal was 5' 8" tall, weight 150 lb. and he had black hair and brown eyes.) It was in Scotland that Neal met and eventually married Margaret Bibby. In 1980 I was interested in doing some research on my ancestry and my wife and I visited my aunt, Margaret McLaughlin. Over lunch and afterwards she told me something about my grandparents and the little she knew about my great-grandfather George Adams Bibby. She said that my grandmother (her mother) Margaret Bibby was (circa 1882) in Pennsylvania in a town that sounded like Housedale. Subsequently I surmised Houtzdale, PA 16651. She said her father's name was George Adams Bibby . Aunt Margaret was unclear why he had two last names. Apparently my grandmother had used the last name of Bibby exclusively. Margaret said that George was either Scottish or English and that he had moved the family to Pennsylvania where he managed a coal mine. At some point my grandmother went back to Scotland. She would have been a young girl so I presume that her mother brought her back to Scotland. My Aunt Margaret didn't know much about her grand-father George Adams Bibby. A later correspondences (posted at ancestry.com)indicates he was married before and had another family. And, as a child he may have been taken in and raised by another family in Scotland named Bibby and subsequently took on their last name too. Neal McLaughlin met Margaret Bibby (Adams,) they were married and resided in Teddystone, Scotland for a time. On May 10, 1912 Neal departed Scotland from Glasgow aboard the ship Parisian bound for the United States. He arrived at the Port of Boston on May 23. My grandmother Margaret (Bibby,) who was pregnant with Catherine their second child, stayed behind in Scotland and followed him later. My father George was the first of their seven children born in America. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
