I don't know when he came to the US or where he originally settled. He lived in New Braunfels, TX before 1885 until sometime after 1894. He moved to San Antonio, TX and lived there until his death in 1945. He married Bertha Schwartz or Swanz and they had 7 children, 4 of which died in infancy. Of the 3 remaining I have information on Helen and Elsie, but nothing on Oscar who was born in 1890. Hope we can find a connection. Jessie

This week's snippet is a bit different. I am asking you to post your interests, a sort of Roll Call. Please send us who you are researching (including dates and places) and who and where you are. It should look something like this: I am seeking any British BESSER but particularly those who came from Germany. I am trying to establish where my great-grandmother, Jenny BESSER, came from (best I have is Gt Glogow) and whether she is related to any of the other German BESSERs that I have found in London in the 1880s/1890s. The only way I can think of doing this is to collect all the BESSER entries I can find and try to piece the families together. Best Wishes, Sherry Landa (in Salford, Lancs, England) [email protected]
Final Baptism entry (for the moment). Elizabeth BESSER d/o Charles and Fanny, bapt 4 Mar 1866, at Steyning, Sussex Steyning is now part of Brighton and Hove. To apply for the birth certificate send a cheque for £6.50 made out to "Brighton and Hove Council" to Brighton Town Hall, Bartholomews, Brighton, BN1 1JA. Please do NOT post the current addresses or telephone numbers of people. If you want to make a contact name and number known the correct way to do it is to post a message asking people to contact you privately and then give them the number or address. It is against all Rootsweb and Ancestry netiquette to post these sorts of details. Once a message has been posted there is NOTHING I can do to retrieve it. These details stay on the archives and can be picked up by any unscrupulous persons. It is an infringement of a person's right to privacy and it is especially important that we protect the elderly and children. Thank you for your cooperation. Two new lists have been formed this week which may be of interest to some of you. Marion Maychell (a good friend) has started: A mailing list for anyone with a genealogical interest in England, http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/ENG/ENGLAND-ROOTS.html subscribe in mail mode by sending a message to [email protected] that contains the word subscribe and nothing else. If you prefer digest mode, then send the command instead to [email protected] I have started (in association with Jackye Sullins) British-Jewry-L The name probably speaks for itself. It's a forum for anyone researching British Jewry. Whether your ancestors were "passing through" or permanent members of British society, this is a place for you. Posts relating to all aspects of life for British Jews as well as research methods, success stories and genealogy will be welcomed. EVERYONE is welcome! Subscribe in mail mode by sending a message to [email protected] that contains the word subscribe and nothing else. Dear Listers, This week's *snippet* is more of an offer you can't refuse than a *snippet*. I am going to Flanders (Nord/Pas-de-Calais/Somme areas of France and West-Vlaanderen, Belgium) in just over 2 weeks. I am offering (on a first come, first served basis) to photograph graves/monumental inscriptions of war dead, provided you can provide me with the name, location and plot number and that the location falls in the above area. Please send your request privately (not to list) and mark it subject line Flanders, then I won't miss it due to my mail filtering system. Best wishes, Sherry Landa List *Owner* [email protected] Website at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~chorleywood/
Dear Listers, In another effort to wake up this list a bit and get people to post, I have decided that each week I shall try to post a *snippet* for your enjoyment/benefit/information :-) As we are already in the second week of January this is a bumper *snippet* -2 for the price of one. This week's (fortnight's) *snippets* are from the CWGC and a birth certificate. Private 6097833 Abraham BESSER, Royal Army Ordnance Corps died Friday 23rd April 1944, aged 29. Son of Harry and Esther BESSER of Kilburn, Middx. Streatham Park Jewish Cemetery, Surrey, Sec F Row 30 Grave 23 Abraham was born at 236 Belsize Road, Kilburn on 15 September 1914, son of Harry BESSER, master tailor, and Esther (ROZENSTEIN). Any takers? Best wishes, Sherry Landa List *Owner* [email protected] Website at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~chorleywood/ This list is only as good as you make it. Hello, This is a cross-list posting. I apologise if you see it several times. I have just spoken to the PRO census help desk (01684 585299). The site is inaccessible currently, due to a server problem (no news there). Session times have been extended to 96 hours. If paying by credit card and you have viewed no records after the 96 hours you will NOT be charged anything. HOWEVER, if you have viewed even one record you will be charged the £5 minimum charge. The advice was to either: a) keep trying within your 96 hour period or b) WAIT! Once the site settles down you should be able to use it *normally*. If you chose option a) and see any records then the £5 will be charged, so the risk is yours, but the help desk official said he'd wait rather than giving his credit card number. It would be nice, if those of us that have not yet spent anything, hung back, and when the site returns we let those who have spent something but not their full £5 get on and at least use up some more of that £5, but I doubt that this will happen. The press have now reported the release of the census on line so I can only imagine things will get worse before they get better. I hope this information is of help to some. Best Wishes, Sherry Landa (in Salford, Lancs) [email protected]
