Hello Peter. Broadmoor Mental Asylum, at Crowthorne, Berkshire, was built in 1863, to replace the notorious Bethlehem (Bedlam) Mental Asylum in London. In 1948, it was taken over by the National Health Service to be used as a hospital for the criminally insane. So if your relative was detained in there before 1948, she was not necessarily a criminal, possibly just mentally unstable. The person I researched, he having died in there in the 1920's, was registered at Windsor Registry Office, so you might find that is the same for your Lucy. Bridget (Maidenhead, Berkshire).
