    3. Dear Karen You can access the 1881 census at no cost (I beleive) on Ancestry.com. I've had a quick look on your behalf, and in 1881 the SMITH family were living at Maidenhead (registration district at that time would have been Cookham), parents James and Ann (he was a wheelwright) with children James 13, Ernest 10, Alvert 6 and Nelly 2. All the family were born in Maidenhead. From FreeBMD (www.freeBMD.com) a James SMITH and Ann GRAY were married in 1870 in the Cookham registration district Good luck with your research Best wishes, Karen . ----- Original Message ----- From: "Karin Serfontein" <kss@mweb.co.za> To: <BERKSHIRE@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 28, 2009 1:11 PM Subject: [BRK] Greetings from South Africa > > > > Dear List, > > I would like to know if someone can help me please with any information on > Frederick Smith born ca 1882? in Maidenhead Ecclesiastical Parish of St > Luke > (1901 census return) > Brothers James H Smith born 1867 > Albert E Smith born 1875 both born in Maidenhead St Luke sub-registration > of > Coocham. > > Who were the parents of the Smith brothers and what was the date of the > parents marriage please? > > If you can help it will be much appreciated. > > Thank you in advance, > > Regards, > > Karin Serfontein nee Smith > > > > > > __________ Information from ESET NOD32 Antivirus, version of virus > signature > database 4463 (20090928) __________ > > The message was checked by ESET NOD32 Antivirus. > > http://www.eset.com > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > BERKSHIRE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

    3. Hi Karin, me again I thought I'd reply off list with other info I've found on this family. I subscribe to Ancestry.com which has all the UK censuses from 1841 to 1901, so this can give you info on James parents, and get you back another generation. In 1851 he was living in Maidenhead with his father Henry (a wheelwright and blacksmith) who was born in Goring, Oxfordshire, and his mother Jane Brewer (they may not have been married) who was born in Castle Combe, Wiltshire. James' siblings were Joseph 16, Elizabeth 13, Ann 10, Isaac 3. I can't find James in 1861 or 1871. Rather sadly, in 1891 there is a James Smith of the same age and born in Maidenhead who is a patient in the Moulsford Lunatic Asylum at Cholsey, Berkshire. No occupation is listed so I can't be sure this is your man. Hope this helps, do ask if you would like any other lookups in the censuses, I'm happy to help.
