    1. Re: [BRK] Mental asylum resident "Lucy HOLMES" (Sandhurst)

    3. Broadmoor was/is an asylum for the criminally insane. I don't know if it always was, but it certainly was in the 1950s when I lived in Sandhurst. Broadmoor is actually more in Crowthorne than in Sandhurst. If it was for the criminally insane back in the days of your Lucy's admission it is possible that there was a crime that she committed that you might find in the newspapers - perhaps in Lincolnshire? Or perhaps not. As an aside - I remember attending a musical put on by the more reliable patients at Broadmoor for about a week every year. They had an orchestra (small), made the sets and the costumes, and the same woman was always the star. The rumor (many folks in the village worked there) was that she had been the daughter of a very protective man, who bought her a pony. One day her pony threw her. Father was so upset that he shot the pony, whereupon the daughter, then in her teens, seized the gun and shot him. And was sent to Broadmoor. Story continued that she had been discharged as people became more understanding of what was or was not mental illness and concluded that she was sane, but that she could not cope with life outside, and asked to be let back in, and, fearing that she would do something harmful to someone and that the authorities would be held responsible, she was re-admitted. And every year was the star of the musical. Your L.H. is on Ancestry at Berkshire > Cawthorne > District Broadmoor Asylum > Page 5 This may not come up in a search, but if you browse the 1901 census, go to Berkshire and then select "Cawthorne" rather than "Crowthorne" you will find her on page 5 Nick -----Original Message----- From: berkshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:berkshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Peter HOLMES Sent: 25 September 2009 10:06 To: Berkshire list Subject: [BRK] Mental asylum resident "Lucy HOLMES" (Sandhurst) G'day from Western Australia, Only minutes ago did I subscribe as I'm trying to track down what happened to my GG grandmother Lucy HOLMES (nee GILL) Ancestry has her in the 1891 census as Lucy HOLMES born abt 1847 in East Keal, Lincolnshire Resident (as a patient of the Broadmoor asylum) at Sandhurst in Berkshire. So far I can't find her death or an entry in the 1901 England census and so far surviving older family members have not been able to assist. She entered the asylum between the 1881 & '91 census dates after leaving the family farm in Pinchbeck (west) near Spalding, in Lincolnshire. It would be interesting to discover some records about that state of her health at time of her admission (or the reason for) and before she died if still as a Broadmoor resident. Do any of the list members have any ideas how I can knock over this brick wall - other than by masses of hard work by telephone, letter or personal visits as I'm not quite "down the road"?
