    3. Hello Mike The surname Rose occurs in both England and Scotland. My Collins Pocket Reference of Scottish Surnames (David Dorward, 1995) says that in England the name derives from the name of the flower i.e. the Rose, and that it doesn't occur that frequently in England. The Scottish surname may be a version of Ross but the most likely etymology is of Norman origin from a family of knights who settled in England after the Conquest and took their surname (with the spelling de Roys or Royce) from their place of origin. A branch of the family led by Hugh Rose arrived in Scotland from England in the late 13th century and acquired by marriage the lands of Kilravock near Nairn. The 7th Chief of the Rose clan built Kilravock Castle which still stands on the banks of the River Nairn. Wikipedia has a page on the Clan Rose.
