I believe I have found two of my connections but it is so strange to me. In the 1841 census Berkshire old Windsor Windsor Great Park one dwelling There is a Bailiff Joseph Simms age 45 Mary age 35 and my relative Ann Berti age 30 her daughter Eliza Berti age 3 and another relative Edward Haselden age 7. Are they incarcerated? Ann married Jacopo Berti in 1832 and they are a couple in 1861. He is listed as a courier from Italy naturalized in that census. Little Eliza died at the age of 5. Thanks Katy
Hi Katy A Bailiff was a Guardian or an officer of the Lord of the Manor below the rank of Steward (a water Bailiff guarded against fish poachers) A steward was like an estate manager, the bailiff/s would be his assistant/s As Ann Berti was living in the same dwelling as Joseph Simms and his wife, maybe its possible that Mary his wife was a relative of Ann's. perhaps her sister. regards MOIRA They usually worked for a large estate ----- Original Message ----- From: "Katy Haselden" <yellowleggin@gmail.com> To: <berkshire@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, August 15, 2010 8:26 PM Subject: [BRK] HASELDEN >I believe I have found two of my connections but it is so strange to me. >In > the 1841 census Berkshire old Windsor > Windsor Great Park one dwelling There is a Bailiff Joseph Simms age 45 > Mary > age 35 and my relative Ann Berti age 30 her daughter Eliza Berti age 3 and > another relative Edward Haselden age 7. Katy and List, The bailiff in the park would be what we call an Estate Manager these days. All large estates had a bailiff. Joseph Sims would have been a relative in all probability. May be a brother-in-law. Hello List, Here is another link showing how the management of an Estate may be organised. There was much variation in the inter World-Wars period. The Co-operative Wholesale Society were very big landowners immediately post WW2. The Duchy of Cornwall is probably the oldest estate in England. Scotland and Ireland had different traditions. http://www.duchyofcornwall.org/faqs.htm The term, courier is used for several different occupations where travelling is involved. I wonder what Jacopo's duties were. He could have been a diplomatic messenger. Your family sounds very interesting, Katy. Nick.
