Katy I'm not sure how useful this reply will be to you, although it may help Nick, as you don't actually say whether there is any record of any of the Haselden men being guardsmen. If they were, then it may help you to know that for many years regular soldiers had to obtain permission to marry as wives were regarded as an encumberance; your family would have been affected by that policy. Sergeants were usually luckier than privates in the marriage 'ballot'. When permission was given wives were 'on the strength' but for many years they had no separate married quarters and unless they were the wives of officers would find themselves having to cook for and do the laundry for the troops, perhaps earning a little pin money by doing the laundry for the officers. I understand that the records for the Guards regiments are almost complete and you might find a note in the regimental diaries if permission had been given for any marriage. I found the note below on the Long Long Trail site for you. 'If you are searching for the army service record of a man who served with the Life Guards, you are likely to succeed. They escaped the 1940 fire that destroyed many such records and are stll held separately. They are held in the original form at the National Archives, in document series WO400.'
