Hello All, I have just joined the list and am hoping someone could please help with information about Hampstead Norris where my grandmother SARAH ELIZABETH ALLEN was born in 1881 to JAMES ALLEN & MARY WATERS. I assume she, and her many siblings, went to school there and wonder where the school records would be kept. Also are the Parish Records in Hampstead Norris? if not, where are they? Other villages with family connections are CHIEVELEY, BEEDON & COMPTON. Any advice on where to research would be most appreciated as I intend to visit the area for a few days at the end of September. BMD's were all registered in WANTAGE. Should I go there? Many thanks in anticipation Judith Daventry
All the Parish Registers you are asking about are in the Berkshire Record Office. Our own Research Centre is on the same site, so if you organise your visit on a day when both facilities are open you could come and look at our Burial & Marriage search suite and the pre 1834 records on the Overseers Papers, which are all searchable by name. The BRO may also have the school records you are interested in, but you will have to ask if they have the years you are after. The Compton St Mary & St Nicholas Parish Registers, Burial Records of all the parishes you mentioned are in the Berkshire Burial Index and the Berkshire Overseers Papers are all available on CD to purchase from the BerksFHS Bookshop.
