Hello, I am researching my name Skates which has a number of historical variations including Skeate. My family came from around Alton in Hampshire and moved to London - Wandsworth and Lambeth. However as far as I know there are no Whites in the family. I have located early variations of the name in both Hampshre and Cumbria. Good luck & I would be interested to know if you find any connections with my family. Edward Skeate WHITE was a brother of my great-grandfather, John William White. Their father was Richard WHITE born c1796 in Reading who married Mary Ann CUTTER on 21 November 1822 at St Giles, Reading. They later moved to Lambeth Surrey where all their children were born. But there were earlier family members called Edward Skeate WHITE one of whom was a mayor of Reading in 1777. 'Esther HATTON married one Edward Skeate WHITE the younger of Reading. In 1777, one Edward Skeate WHITE was Mayor of Reading.' I am trying to join the dots between Richard and earlier generations of Whites. So far I've been unable to find parish records relating to this family and I'd be grateful for any relavant information. Hello David Thanks for your comments re Skates/Skeate. I don't know when the Skeate/White connection began but it was pre-1750 at least as far as I'm aware. I haven't gone further back yet. My White line came from Berkshire but there were business and family connections in London, other counties and also in Dublin. Presumably there was an as-yet-undocumented White/Skeate marriage further back ... who knows how far? On the White side Skeate has been given as a second name at least once in each generation up until at least my grandparents generation and perhaps even further forward as I haven't traced all the descendants of this line. Likewise I'd be interested if you ever get back to the White connection. Best wishes, Elissa Kester Australia I am researching my name Skates which has a number of historical variations including Skeate.
