Dear Listers I wrote to the Berkshire County Office re the derivation/existence of Burville in Berkshire and received the following very prompt reply: Ref: GG/E10N Dear Ms Nichols, Thank you for your enquiry. I have not been able to find that any place called Burville has ever existed in Berkshire. My guess would be that the person concerned was born in Burghfield, which is a village just to the south-west of Reading. The enumerators wrote down people's replies to the census questions, so unfamiliar names where sometimes misheard and recorded wrongly. I hope this is helpful. Thank you for your replies and interest. Have you considered Turville in Buckinghamshire, the adjoining county? Many parts of Berkshire were in Bucks although I don't think this applies to Turville. If, as many have suggested, the place of birth is Burghfield & he was baprised there, you may be interested to know that BerksFHS have transcribed the Parish Registers of Burghfield and made them available on CD.
