Colleagues The next meeting of the Oxfordshire Family History Society will take place on Monday 27 September 2010. It will be held at the usual venue at Exeter Hall, Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1AB. Doors open at 7.15pm for coffee, help with both genealogy and computers, and the bookstall. The subject of the talk at 8.00pm is "From Headington to Hitler: An Ordinary Man in an Extraordinary War", which will be presented by Phil Angell. Our speaker will probably be remembered by many as breakfast presenter and Programme Director of the Oxfordshire local radio station FOX FM during the 1990's. Phil's father was in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, and in 1941 trained at Cowley Barracks, just yards away from where Phil was eventually to broadcast from. Phil still works in local radio, and is also a patron of the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Trust :- _http://www.sofo.org.uk/_ (http://www.sofo.org.uk/) I asked Phil about the content of his talk, which details how he researched his own father's military past and how he went on to privately publish a book to record his findings. Phil responded :- How do you ask your father how many people he killed during World War II ? And how would you feel if he gave you the answer ? Do you truly understand your own place within time and within history ? And if you wanted to publish a book privately, what are the logistics involved and how much does it cost ? Phil Angell has never spoken to a family or local history society previously. The origins of this talk are in a Remembrance Sunday interview that I heard him give on local radio several years ago. The passion, the clarity of delivery and his knowledge about the minutiae of the Second World War immediately made me seek him out as a speaker. I hope that researchers will attend the presentation, and I hope that they will be inspired by it. All members, potential members and their guests are welcome.
