Jules In the St. Helens marriage index there is no John ABDY listed and there are no HAWKE marriages listed. Yet when one looks through the 1734 marriages, there they are: 1734 17 Feb ABDY John yeoman, Steventon HAWKES Mary Steventon So much for relying on the index! Here are Steventon baptisms: 1736 23 Nov ABDY Mary d John and Mary 1738 25 Feb ABDY John s John and Mary 1744 21 Oct ABDY James s John and Mary There are no other ABDY baptisms, nor any for HAWKE Here are the burials for Steventon: 1745 27 Feb ABDY Thomas of Clifton 1778 20 May ABDY Mary w of John There is no record of the banns in Harwell, as the transcript only beings in 1814 for these. In Clifton Hampden there are these burial entries: 1729 5 Nov ABDEY Mary d of Thomas and Amy 1740 4 Feb ABDEY Amy w of Thomas All of this info is taken from the CD transcripts put out by the Oxford FHS. I hope this is of some help to you. I don't have access to Brightwell. I do have the entry but I just cannot get any further than that. I have followed the ABDY line meticulously so I thought that perhaps I would have better luck with the HAWKE people, Mary being the only one I have to go by LOL... If I am on the right track I have John's death as 15.4.1788, St. Agatha, Brightwell, Berkshire. They are both shown as "of Steventon". Mary was possibly buried 20th May 1778 St. Michaels and All Angels, Steventon, Berkshire. As Mary and John's banns were given out at Harwell, I am assuming that Anne ABDEY b. 1734, Harwell was their first daughter. They had three other children born in Steventon. For some reason I have put Culham in brackets. On checking my notes John and Mary's marriage was definitely in the year of 1734 sorry about that, I should have checked first. In my programme if one puts in the year in the early months it sometimes comes out as say 34/35. I do not know how to alter that. Thanks for your trouble. Could the marriage have taken place in some other parish around Abingdon? I would like to be able to find out about her parents and siblings. I am also researching the ABDY and FRANKLIN lines. Thankyou.
