    1. [BRK] Maidenhead Tragedy, James & Emma WINTER ( 1875 )
    2. >From The Hull Packet and East Riding Times ( Hull, England ), Friday, January 8, 1875; Issue 4692. A NEW YEAR'S EVE TRAGEDY. A sad event occurred on New Year's Eve at Boyn Hill, near Maidenhead. A young married man named James WINTER had been out with a companion shooting. On his way home he called at a public-house, left his companion there, and went to his own house, which was nearly opposite. Immediately afterwards a report of a gun was heard, and WINTER ran out of doors, crying, "I have shot my sister !" The neighbours on going in found the inner room filled with smoke, and Emma WINTER , an imbecile woman, lying dead. WINTER's statement was that the gun exploded as he was putting it down in a corner, and that it was at half-cock. Death must have been instantaneous.

    2. Jill Muir
    3. Hi there, I am trying to help a cousin with a spot of research and have Jacob SMITH born Berkshire in 1841 East Hendred, Berkshire census. By the 1851 census his wife Hannah is a widow. Jacob is shown as buried East Hendred 1843 aged 37 years. Jacob is not shown as being baptised in East Hendred. Can anyone help please? Kind Regards, Jill

    3. Dear Jill, > I am trying to help a cousin with a spot of research and have Jacob SMITH > born Berkshire in 1841 East Hendred, Berkshire census. By the 1851 census > his wife Hannah is a widow. Jacob is shown as buried East Hendred 1843 aged > 37 years. Given that Hannah SMITH and her distinctively named son Shadrach were born in Sutton Courtenay, I wondered if it would be worth looking for a Smith marrying a Hannah ?? there. And in fact, there is one - from the Oxfordshire FHS transcript: 19 April 1834, Jocab (sic) SMITH of Sotwell married Hannah DENTON. (witnesses Ralph DENTON and W Herring, who witnessed every marriage.) There's a Sarah DENTON with the family in East Hendred in 1841. However, I can't see a baptism for Jacob Smith at Sotwell, or Brightwell, or Wallingford St Leonard. There is an "Asher Smith" baptising children at Brightwell who gave almost all his children "Old Testament" names, but not a Jacob among them. So things have only moved a little way. Best wishes Paul -- Paul Betteridge, Leafield, Oxfordshire pbetteridge@pobox.com
