    3. Thanks!   Yes Nivard, you are quite right.  Clearly I put so much information in about the Elliotts & Van Cortlands that I forgot to point out that she's shown as Elizabeth Wheeler in the 1841, 51 and 61 censuses!  The 51 and 61 censuses describe her as Isaac's mother and grandmother.  The Parish records make clear she would be his grandmother, not mother (including the marriage between Elizabeth KNIBB and Isaac WHEELER c1780 in Binfield in 1804).  I'm sorry for any confusion caused.   No Wendy - I'm not trying to get one of you to go to the record office for me.  I was just wondering, before I send an e-mail to the record office and perhaps visit, whether any of you happened to know anything useful which might point me in the right direction.  A bit of a long shot perhaps, but you never know...   Thanks for the photo link.  Perhaps unsurprisingly, it looks very posh.   Anyway, I'll be very happy to do look-ups on the 1801 census if anyone is interested (including the "missing" map!).   Therese.

    3. Therese I wasn't taking it personally! don't drive nowadays as have been ill. If you can visit I would recommend it as you will able to see everything they have and judge for yourself. I have just been in touch with the new Oxhist unit (combined Oxford records offices etc.) about some what I hope will turn out to be family material and demolish one of our long standing brick walls. Some of the stuff cannot be photocopied because it is too large even for the A3 printer; one document has been tied a corner so they can only copy the smaller upper page (and presumably the bits around the edges of the page below) as they can't fold it back. Fortunately the stuff they can copy is most important to me and I have sent the order off. As they offer a transcription service, at a cost, I have asked for a price for transcribing the second sheet of the tied document. These are wills and a receipt for a legacy – very specific (can’t wait to see why the receipt is A3 size – hopefully lots of additional information she says greedily!) I think that as you are looking for something rather more general it would be well worth a visit, especially as you may be able to look at full birth, marriage death material for your Binfield family and so glean some details that don’t show on the transcription sites.
