Dear Nivard, This is absolutely wonderful! Thank you so much! His birthplace on the 1911 census is also given as Belgom. I have just been searching on Ancestry with just two pieces of information, the surname as Durham, and the keyword as India. This has brought up a family in Gloucester in 1901 (a Stephen without wife) and in the info you sent Gloucester was mentioned, so it's looking very very good. Ancestry has 19 year old Stephen's middle initial as "R" but that can easilly be a mistranscription or written incorrectly on the census forms. Also in the info you sent was mention of a sister, Elizabeth, who according to the same 1901 census was born at Portsmouth, Hampshire. Interestingly, again in the 1901 census, this time in Portsmouth, is a Henrietta Durham aged 35 born Burmah. As you know I can't see the images, so I don't know if she (or the Stephen in 1901) are recorded as married or widowed. Still in Portsmouth in late 1902 is the death of a henrietta Durham at Portsmouth, aged 37. On ancestry's Will & Probate collection is Henrietta Durham at Portsmouth in 1903, again I don't know what additional info the image holds, but I've put out a request on the Portsmouth / Gosport list for help with that. I deeply thank you for the wonderful assistance you've given me with regards this family, outstanding!!! Kindest regards, Jon
Jon, Nivard always does these things so well! As a bit extra - I suspect 'Belgom' is in fact Belgaum in Karnataka state, India Ed ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jon's FH" <jons.fh@btinternet.com> To: <berkshire@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 30, 2011 12:50 PM Subject: Re: [BRK] Stephen Allan Nixey DURHAM > Dear Nivard, >
