Between Pangbourne and Streatley lies the village of Lower Basildon. During the period 1776 to 1783 the stately home Basildon Park was being built there. Presumably a lot of people were employed in one way or another on this project, and may have lodged in Streatley or Pangbourne. May be a coincidence. The chap who built this place was called Sir Francis SYKES, and there is actually a family tree on Familysearch quoting the marriage of a Francis SYKES to an Elizabeth MONCKTON 3 June 1771- must be a different one ( though possibly related?) as she subsequently married a Drummond SMITH in 1805. The Francis SYKES who built Basildon Park died in 1804. Maybe more coincidences. A family tree on Ancestry shows that it was the Sir Francis SYKES who built Basildon Park who married Elizabeth Monckton. Familysearch has a baptism of Elizabeth LARDNER to Edmund LARDNER and Elizabeth on 17th May 1782 at Pangbourne. Also in the pilot site there is a burial of an Edmund Lardner age 76 on 13 June 1821, but it does not say where. By following the LDS film number for this transcription in the LDS catalogue I expect that an expert could tell you where it was. However a different entry on the same LDS film gives the age of the man of the same name buried in London on the same date as 63. Presumably the film number may also be a clue as to where in Hampshire the first marriage (or banns of marriage) of Edmund LARDNER and Elizabeth MONCKTON was. The Monckton name has various aristocratic connections. Familysearch pilot also has the marriage of Sophia, daughter of Edmund Lardner, to Thomas HILLS on 5 Oct 1840 at St James', Paddington, and Mary Ann LARDNER daughter of Edmund LARDNER to George BRADFORD on 29 Dec 1851 at St Mary, Lambeth. There seems to have been another Edmund LARDNER in London at the time, judging by search results. The Ancestry family tree referred to in another posting seems to have followed the descent via Sophia. Hi Jeff Thank you very much for all the time and trouble you have taken to find and send all this information. It really is amazing how helpful some people can be. It will take me a while to read and digest all that you have written, but that will have to be when I am not so tired ( hurry up tomorrow morning:-)).
