>From Ellesmere Guardian, ( New Zealand ), Volume LX, Issue 41, 26 May 1939, Page 3. CHILDHOOD PLEDGE - REDEEMED AFTER TWENTY YEARS. London, May 6 Because of his sister's childhood pledge, the body of a German officer who died in 1918 was exhumed at Bray cemetery, Berkshire, this week. The officer, Lieut. Eugen Wilhelm MAHN , died while a prisoner of war. When MAHN and his sister Elfrida were children they engaged in a vow never to allow themselves to be buried apart. War came, and Lieut. MAHN , then aged 27, was captured. He was sent to the internment camp at Holyport, near Maidenhead. There he and a number of others refused to eat, believing that their food had been poisoned. Their resistance weakened, they became victims of the 1918 influenza epidemic. For 20 years his sister saved up in order that she might redeem the childhood pledge. Then she obtained a permit from the British Home Office. She stood by and wept as the coffin was dug up and the remains were placed in a new ornamental one which was sealed and put in a hearse for the journey to Germany.
The next meeting of the Berks FHS Computer Branch will be on Wednesday 20th April 2011. Chris Watts is coming to the Berks FHS Computer Branch with his talk 'Follow that lead: From Census Entry to Google Maps' Having located a family in one of the census returns how can one find out where the property in which they lived is located and what did it look like? This is an intriguing question, the solution to which is often hampered by the destruction of property during two world wars and the actions of property developers. In this talk, Chris will explore some possible avenues to follow. The examples used will concentrate on the 1911 census but earlier possibilities will not be ignored As usual, we will be bringing a selection of items from the Berks FHS bookstall together with many sale bargains. In addition there will be a number of experts on hand to help answer any family history problems or computer related queries you may have. Our meeting will be at the usual venue of the Oakwood Centre, Woodley, Reading RG5 4JZ; 7.15 for a 7.45 start. Everyone is welcome at our meetings, you do not have to be a member of the Society, so why not bring your friends along. Free parking opposite the centre - see streetview www.tinyurl.com/oakwood-centre Looking forward to seeing you all. http://www.workhouses.org.uk/ is a good place to start. It explains the circumstances in which people could end up in workhouses. Then click on the left on Workhouse Locations English Poor Law Unions Berkshire Faringdon It looks as if some records exist at Berkshire Record Office but may not contain much detail of individual inmates, though it does seem they have the baptism records for the workhouse over that time period. As Ashbury was in Faringdon Poor Law Union ( and thus registration district) I did a search of FreeBMD for anyone called Agnes born in that district in the years 1842/1843 who would thus have been aged 8 in 1851. Just one, in March quarter 1843, Agnes VARNEY Farringdon VI 182 However there was a death of an Agnes VARNEY in 1849 as well. Another approach would be to start off with all the JONES families in Ashbury in 1841 and try to track their BMDs through to 1851 census, assuming that the surname is right but that maybe the child's birth was not registered. http://www.berksfhs.org.uk/genuki/BRK/Ashbury/index.html may be useful. Why JONES, a Welsh surname, in Berkshire? Think Drove Roads, poor Welsh drovers driving herds of cattle, sheep and even geese across country on the old tracks to the rich South-East of England for sale and slaughter. The Ridgeway over the Berkshire Downs went right past Ashbury. Two other thoughts. It could have been that Agnes was not actually born in Ashbury, but her mother 'belonged' to that parish, so if her mother was taken into the workhouse Alice came with her. Also, children may not have known how old they were. Officials such as workhouse masters may have estimated the ages. It looks as if some records exist at Berkshire Record Office but may not contain much detail of individual inmates, though it does seem they have the baptism records for the workhouse over that time period. I scored big time with the workhouse records for Bradfield at BRO. From 1836-1844, my 3rd great-grandmother and most of her children were in and out of the workhouse. Each arrival and departure was documented with remarks on character, circumstances, observations, and a description. My favorite was "Bastard mother absconded leaving five children destitute. Husband recently dead."

Hello Jeff, It amused me [ in the nicest way of course] that you replied and looked up this family for me. Thank you for your help. It helped me concentrate my mind again just as I had been flagging. Maybe we should swop counties/countries? ;-)) Yes thanks, I did have the Free BMD for Frederick but I simply cannot find his baptism.. Which is odd but maybe he was written on the back of the proverbial vicar's envelope or something, as the children either side of him are baptised. I think he may well have been baptised at Kingston Bagpuize, but we were only asked when we transcribed them to go to 1880 and so we stopped at that date. Frederick's parents were GEORGE WILLIAM WEBB who was born 1858 in Drayton, Abingdon, Berkshire | Free BMD Ab 2c 248. He married MARY JANE WALTERS in June Quarter 1878 Free BMD Faringdon 2c 503, daughter of WILLIAM WALTERS and JANE THATCHER. She was born Dec 1854 in Abingdon, Berkshire and the family were living near the WEBB family in Little London, which is actually Longworth but regarded as Southmoor for many years and is in fact becoming so officially shortly. > This couple are not belonging to the above: > However in 1881 George B 1825 is with Rosanna Thank you so much for the help Jeff, it is much appreciated. Also sent to the Oxfordshire List Hello Listers, I am compiling family histories of men who fought in our local villages, of Kingston Bagpuize, Southmoor [Draycott Moor], and Hinton Waldrist. This is for an exhibition we [Local history Society] http://www.longworth-district-history-society.org.uk/programme.htm are holding on the 21st April. Currently researching the WEBB family. All the children of George William and Mary Ann Webb who lived at Little London, Southmoor, with the excepting of Frederick were baptised locally. I have hunted the above parishes and also Drayton, Abingdon where his father tells us he was born. Maybe I missed him? Anyhow, a Canadian newspaper report of his war record tells me that he was born 04 May 1887. Can anyone help by finding the baptism of Frederick, his father George William Webb b, ca 1860 and George William's marriage to Mary Ann Waller please? Very many thanks. Hi Katie, I am indebted to you for your kind help. This particular family is not connected to my own (as far as I know) but is part of a mystery puzzle that I am gradually piecing together for my name study concerning the son George. His life clearly takes a turn and he ends up in Hampshire as a seaman; his families after him retain a naval connection travelling on to Devon thence to Birkenhead in Cheshire. So, if anyone here knows of a different destiny for this George I should be most interested. He is my only candidate for George Strange in the 1851 census in Portsea - pensioner from marines, born c 1806 Bottley (sic), Berkshire. He was at sea in the 1841 census. (1851 Ref HO107; Piece: 1657; Folio: 171; Page: 13) My known origins in Berkshire are the STRANGE's of Long Wittenham: John c1570-? + Jone ?-1625.... William 1595-1668 .... Richard 1635- 1718 .... Adam 1684-1753 .... John 1717-1780 .... John 1750-1809 .... John 1778 (Caversham)-1845 who left Long Wittenham, and Berkshire, for Henley on Thames in Oxfordshire. I think the second link that showed in Paul's email is the correct one. Probably best Paul if you didn't use dropped hypens as in _http://www.ofhs.org.uk/CDsales.html_ And simply show as http://www.ofhs.org.uk/DVDsales.html Which goes straight to the correct page of course. As far as I can see, Mike, James STRANGE and Elizabeth CURTIS married 18 November 1799, he being a widower and she a spinster. Then baptisms for George 1805 - 21 April Charles 1807 - 28 June James 1810 - 22 January Sally 1813 - 14 February (now noting that Dad was a labourer from Botley Pound) No sign of Charlotte in Cumnor, I'm afraid. I checked to see if they'd nipped down to North or South Hinksey for her christening, but no luck, the only one I saw there being in 1861, on September 29 in South Hinksey, where Llewellyn Kimber STRANGE was baptised, illegit s. ('James &'crossed out) Laura, New Hinksey. I see from her later marriage that Laura was the daughter of Francis STRANGE, wine merchant. You will know whether she is any relation to your family at all. I have no connection with this family, but they may have been neighbours of my family. Always fun to bear that in mind, I think. :) HTH Katie de Haan The Netherlands -----Oorspronkelijk bericht---Van: berkshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:berkshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] Namens Mike Strange Verzonden: zaterdag 9 april 2011 23:41 Aan: berkshire@rootsweb.com Onderwerp: [BRK] Cumnor Parish Records - STRANGE Could someone with Cumnor parish records please advise some dates for me as there appears to be some conflicting and uncertain information about: Marriage: James STRANGE and Elizabeth CURTIS 1799 Baptisms to James STRANGE and Elizabeth (CURTIS) Charlotte STRANGE 1799 or 1800 George STRANGE 21 Apr or 21 Aug 1805 Charles STRANGE 25 or 28 Jun 1807 James STRANGE 22 Jan 1810 Sarah or Sally STRANGE 14 Feb 1813 If anyone here has researched this family I should be very interested to hear from you.
