    1. [BRK] The HISSEY family of Berkshire
    2. Jon's FH
    3. Hi everyone, With the relatively new style familysearch.org website up and running, I thought I'd try and locate some info on my 4xGreat Grandmother's family. Elizabeth married my 4xGreat Grandfather, John NIXEY at Upton cum Chalvey in 1765. All indexes I've been able to find have her surname as HESSEY, and one transcription of the entry notes that she signed her name HISSEY. There aren't any entries on familysearch for HESSEY that come close to being the right person, but there is an Elizabeth HISSEY bapt at Peasemore, Berkshire, on April 11,1742, the daughter of Henry and Ann. Elizabeth NIXEY died at Upton cum Chalvey in 1813 aged 73, giving an approx year of birth of 1740. This is the closest I've come to so far. Are there any HISSEY / HESSEY researchers out there who know more about this family's movements please? My own NIXEY family have done a fair bit of jumping back and fore between Buckinghamshire and Berkshire, including the above mentioned John who was apprenticed for 7 years to a Wheelwright named William COX of Brightwell, Berkshire in 1754. If he completed those 7 years, that could put him in the Brightwell area until 1761, only a few years before he and Elizabeth were married. Being totally blind, I'm unable to view online maps of Berkshire. Could SKS please give me an idea of how far Brightwell and Peasemore were from each other? With many thanks in advance for any hints, clues, suggestions and help, best wishes to all, Jon

    1. [BRK] Oxfordshire FHS meeting - Monday 27 June 2011
    2. All The next meeting of the Oxfordshire Family History Society will take place on Monday 27 June 2011 at the usual venue at Exeter Hall, Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1AB. Doors open at 7.15pm for coffee, help with both genealogy and computers, and the bookstall, exchange journals and the library. After a brief AGM at 8.00pm, the subject of the talk is "The Saga of the Beckinghams and Kaiser Bill". This will be presented by Alex McGahey. Our speaker Alex McGahey is a retired bank official who now works for a local Oxfordshire charity. He is well-known in OFHS circles as a current member of the executive committee, as a recent Membership Secretary, and as a long-standing member of the Computer Group Panel. Alex has been researching his own family history since 1995 and has been conducting a "One-Name Study" of Beckingham, his maternal grandfather's name, since 2001. Alex became interested in World War I when he was given some papers relating to his Grandfather's military service. This prompted him to decide to ascertain who all of the nineteen Beckingham/Beckenham World War I casualties actually were, and how they fitted into his own family and other pedigrees. In 2002, Alex published the book that shares the name "The Saga of the Beckinghams and Kaiser Bill", although this also contains details of those of the Beckingham/Beckenham surname who came home. All members, potential members and their guests are welcome. For directions as to how to get to the Exeter Hall, please see :- _http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ExeterHall.html_ (http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ExeterHall.html) For a list of future OFHS meetings, please see :- _http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html_ (http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html) Any queries, please contact me off-list. As part of the event, Tony Hadland will speak on "The Duke and the Miner's Daughter". Family tradition said that Tony's great-grandfather, Thomas Young, was the illegitimate son of a Duke. Using techniques anybody can employ, Tony discovered the truth was even more interesting than the legend. His normal address was given as 64, Thames Eyot, Twickenham, and his occupation as technical representative(engineering). His son-in -law AVM White of Cornerways, 11 Basing Close, Thames Ditton, Surrey was the informant. I have tried checking with the Local Studies in Middlesex for a possible obituary or death notice that might cast more light on Leonard's life. There is not any. It is a bit of a long shot but I wonder given that he died in Berkshire if any such notice may have appeared in local papers. I know he had at least 2 marriages, the second to a Flora Gertrude Plowman. Best wishes, Mary

They were both very Penitent, and behaved in a manner becoming Persons in their unhappy Circumstances. STRAINGE was born in Oxfordshire, and BROWN in Hampshire, both were bred to Husbandry, and were the Issue of very honest Parents. BROWN has left behind him a Wife, an honest industrious Woman, and one Child; but STRAINGE was never married. Neither of them were above 25 Years of Age. N.B. Not connected to our research, but, in other reports, the name of the murdered man was Mr. BLAGRAVE.
