    3. Hi Paul, That helps quite a lot, so thank you very much for the help. Asher Smith may well be the father - maybe Jacob was baptised elsewhere. I will take a look on FamilySearch to see if I can find those other children. Cheers, Kind Regards, Jill -----Original Message----- From: berkshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:berkshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Paul Betteridge Sent: 11 August 2011 21:40 To: berkshire@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BRK] Jacob SMITH born Berkshire 1806 Dear Jill, > I am trying to help a cousin with a spot of research and have Jacob SMITH > born Berkshire in 1841 East Hendred, Berkshire census. Given that Hannah SMITH and her distinctively named son Shadrach were born in Sutton Courtenay, I wondered if it would be worth looking for a Smith marrying a Hannah ?? there. And in fact, there is one - from the Oxfordshire FHS transcript: 19 April 1834, Jocab (sic) SMITH of Sotwell married Hannah DENTON. (witnesses Ralph DENTON and W Herring, who witnessed every marriage.) There's a Sarah DENTON with the family in East Hendred in 1841. However, I can't see a baptism for Jacob Smith at Sotwell, or Brightwell, or Wallingford St Leonard. There is an "Asher Smith" baptising children at Brightwell who gave almost all his children "Old Testament" names, but not a Jacob among them. So things have only moved a little way. Best wishes Paul -- Paul Betteridge, Leafield, Oxfordshire pbetteridge@pobox.com

    1. [BRK] Maidenhead Tragedy, James & Emma WINTER ( 1875 )
    2. >From The Hull Packet and East Riding Times ( Hull, England ), Friday, January 8, 1875; Issue 4692. A NEW YEAR'S EVE TRAGEDY. A sad event occurred on New Year's Eve at Boyn Hill, near Maidenhead. A young married man named James WINTER had been out with a companion shooting. On his way home he called at a public-house, left his companion there, and went to his own house, which was nearly opposite. Immediately afterwards a report of a gun was heard, and WINTER ran out of doors, crying, "I have shot my sister !" The neighbours on going in found the inner room filled with smoke, and Emma WINTER , an imbecile woman, lying dead. WINTER's statement was that the gun exploded as he was putting it down in a corner, and that it was at half-cock. Death must have been instantaneous.

    1. [BRK] Mr. C. JAMES , hairdresser, reduces price of Bread ( 1801 )
    2. >From Caledonian Mercury ( Edinburgh, Scotland ), Saturday, September 12, 1801; Issue 12481. On the 25th and 26th ult. Mr. C. JAMES , hair-dresser of Maidenhead, Berkshire, employed a horse and cart solely for the purpose of fetching bread from Beaconsfield to Maidenhead, and selling the same amongst the inhabitants there at 3 pence per quartern loaf under the usual price at that place; for which bread he had a quick sale, and not only well paid himself for his trouble, but gained the esteem of the people in general, as the said bread cost him only 10½ pence per quartern loaf, at Beaconsfield, sold by him at Maidenhead for 1 shilling ( which was 12 pence ) and at the same time the price of the quartern loaf at Maidenhead was 1 shilling and 3 pence. On the following day, to the great joy of the inhabitants, the bakers of Maidenhead reduced the price of bread from 1 s N.B. A quartern loaf appears to have weighted about 4 pounds ( 1.81 kilograms ) according to this site:- www.thefreedictionary.com/quartern hilling 3 pence to 1 shilling per quartern loaf.

    3. Dear Jon in 1901 Henrietta DURHAM, 35, married, is a servant, housekeeper to William C. Hinde, single, 45, Shipwright, H M Dockyard, and his son William C. HINDE age 6 months, both born Portsmouth. Henrietta is shown as born Rangoon, B. Burmah This is at 17 Durham Street in Portsmouth. In Gloucester, after no. 10 Bearlands there is an entry for Barracks, with a note attached - For remainder of barracks see p.39. In Barracks we have Stephen Durham M 42 Sergeant Major Glos Regiment b India Stephen Durham S 19 Jam manufacturer's clerk b India Catherine Durham S 18 b India Elizabeth Durham S 16 b Hants, Portsmouth Georgeana Durham S 12 b Kent,Dover Francis Durham S 10 b West Meath,Athlone Lilian Durham S 4 b Glos,Cheltenham. Henrietta died in Dec qr 1902 in Portsmouth age 37, Portsmouth 2b 294 The best bet to find Henrietta's maiden name would be birth of Georgina Alice DURHAM in Dec quarter 1888, Dover 2a 975 Elizabeth DURHAM married in Dec qr 1908 and there is also a John Browning SINCLAIR on that page. This is Gloucester district 6a 646 Either her writing was poor, or more likely the local vicar or registrar had poor handwriting, as in the GRO index she also appears with surnames DONLAN, DUNHAM and DUNBAR Catherine DURHAM married in June quarter 1911 in Gloucester. 6a 709 Best wishes Jeff ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jon's FH" <jons.fh@btinternet.com> To: <berkshire@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 30, 2011 12:50 PM Subject: Re: [BRK] Stephen Allan Nixey DURHAM > Dear Nivard, > > This is absolutely wonderful! 3. Dear Nivard, This is absolutely wonderful! Thank you so much! His birthplace on the 1911 census is also given as Belgom. I have just been searching on Ancestry with just two pieces of information, the surname as Durham, and the keyword as India. This has brought up a family in Gloucester in 1901 (a Stephen without wife) and in the info you sent Gloucester was mentioned, so it's looking very very good. Ancestry has 19 year old Stephen's middle initial as "R" but that can easilly be a mistranscription or written incorrectly on the census forms. Also in the info you sent was mention of a sister, Elizabeth, who according to the same 1901 census was born at Portsmouth, Hampshire. Interestingly, again in the 1901 census, this time in Portsmouth, is a Henrietta Durham aged 35 born Burmah. As you know I can't see the images, so I don't know if she (or the Stephen in 1901) are recorded as married or widowed. Still in Portsmouth in late 1902 is the death of a henrietta Durham at Portsmouth, aged 37. On ancestry's Will & Probate collection is Henrietta Durham at Portsmouth in 1903, again I don't know what additional info the image holds, but I've put out a request on the Portsmouth / Gosport list for help with that. I deeply thank you for the wonderful assistance you've given me with regards this family, outstanding!!! Kindest regards, Jon

    3. Hi listers, I wonder if anyone can help in this query please? In the 1911 Census, I have a Stephen Allan Nixey DURHAM living in the Reading area. Please note I'm not asking for a lookup, I have paid for the details on the 1911census website. His occupation is a Butchers Clerk. On the new familysearch.org website, I have found his birth details wich state he was born at Bombay, India on February 10,1882, which ties up nicely with the 1911 census. His parents were Stephen James & Henrietta Adelaide DURHAM. So far I've had no success in finding a marriage entry for Stephen and Henrietta. As Stephen jnr was unmarried in 1911 and living in Reading, I thought there may be a chance that he fits in to someone's tree somewhere along the line. I'd love to hear from anyone who can shed a little more light on this fellow. Kindest regards to all, Jon
