    3. One of my ancestors John Sands is reputed to have been baptised at St Michael's in Sandhurst, Berkshire . Records in Australia re his birth are confusing giving a range for his birth from 1818 to 1820. Are the church records for that period extant? If so any details of him or any siblings would be most appreciated. Jocelyn in Sydney

    1. [BRK] Watts family of Berkshire.
    2. Steve McTaggart
    3. Hi, I am seeking information on Henry Watts and his family. Henry was born in Berkshire in 1841, married Eliza Burbidge in 1859 and migrated to Australia in 1870. Henry was a bricklayer by trade. I have found him in the 1861 census living in Camberwell and his birthplace is listed, however I cannot read the entry for the town. Henry's death certificate lists his father as Richard Watts, bricklayer and his mother Elizabeth Robins. The 1851 census shows Richard living in Inkpen, Berkshire with family including wife Martha and Henry, aged 10. This could be the correct Henry, however the mother doesn't fit. If anyone has any information on this family, it will be greatly appreciated. Regards, Steve, Sydney Aust.

    3. Steve On the 1851 he is home with his parents at Great Common Inkpen and his birthplace is given as Inkpen. In 1841 the Richard entry has Martha as his wife and Henry aged 6 months. The 1861 entry at Camberwell has a birthplace that is almost impossible to read, nearest I can some is Speen. However his parents are also living in Camberwell, again Richard and Martha - in Acorn Street,. Richard's baptism is on www.familysearch.org for 1810 - if you put C23371 into the batch number box you will get all the Inkpen baptisms. They also have what looks like his marriage to Martha ROBINS at Kintbury in 1834, perhaps Henry was not sure of his mother's first name? On the 1861 census Martha's birthplace is West Woody (probably West Woodhay which is part of Kintbury) In fact West Woodhay, Speen and Inkpen are all within the 'hundred of Kintbury Eagle'. Check out the Berkshire pages on www.genuki.org for more information Wendy -----Original Message----- From: Steve McTaggart Sent: Wednesday, August 24, 2011 9:13 AM To: BERKSHIRE@rootsweb.com Subject: [BRK] Watts family of Berkshire. 3. Hi Jon, Sorry this is late. I have just come across your request. There were some HISSEY families here in my village for many years and this lady has researched the family well. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~amandataylor/pafg15.htm Just looked at the Berkshire Archdeaconry Probate Records 1480-1652 there are HISSEY but no NIXEY families. Kind Regards, Jill -----Original Message----- From: berkshire-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:berkshire-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jon's FH Sent: 21 June 2011 11:33 To: berkshire@rootsweb.com Subject: [BRK] The HISSEY family of Berkshire Hi everyone, With the relatively new style familysearch.org website up and running, I thought I'd try and locate some info on my 4xGreat Grandmother's family. Elizabeth married my 4xGreat Grandfather, John NIXEY at Upton cum Chalvey in 1765. All indexes I've been able to find have her surname as HESSEY, and one transcription of the entry notes that she signed her name HISSEY. There aren't any entries on familysearch for HESSEY that come close to being the right person, but there is an Elizabeth HISSEY bapt at Peasemore, Berkshire, on April 11,1742, the daughter of Henry and Ann. Elizabeth NIXEY died at Upton cum Chalvey in 1813 aged 73, giving an approx year of birth of 1740. This is the closest I've come to so far. Are there any HISSEY / HESSEY researchers out there who know more about this family's movements please? My own NIXEY family have done a fair bit of jumping back and fore between Buckinghamshire and Berkshire, including the above mentioned John who was apprenticed for 7 years to a Wheelwright named William COX of Brightwell, Berkshire in 1754. If he completed those 7 years, that could put him in the Brightwell area until 1761, only a few years before he and Elizabeth were married. Being totally blind, I'm unable to view online maps of Berkshire. Could SKS please give me an idea of how far Brightwell and Peasemore were from each other? With many thanks in advance for any hints, clues, suggestions and help, best wishes to all, Jon ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to BERKSHIRE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Thanks also for sharing the correction to the name and you intention to make the correction in the index - So, we are back with the irritating question where did Ernest get that money?? - I think almost 200,000 pounds at todays value! And where was he for that period? I guess we will never know for sure ................................. I am in the process of ordering Ernest's will...... maybe there will be a clue there? You have been a tremendous help and I thank you very much for your time, research skills and the helpful knowledge you have generously passed on to me. Best regards James -----Original Message----- From: Nivard Ovington Sent: Tuesday, August 23, 2011 8:03 PM To: berkshire@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BRK] Ernest Cope- Reading Hi again A couple of things from your post I said he was farming 20 acres in 1871 and was listed as owning just over 2 acres in the 1873 returns *not* that he owned 20 acres in 1871 Most farmers did not own the land they farmed (or at least all of it) in my experience the majority rented or leased the land for a period of time (three years often) and tried to accumulate some of their own as they went along with the profits (if there were any) My point in posting the 1871 20 acres against the 1873 2 acres was that it pointed towards the fact that he did not own the 20 acres The fact the various COPEs are listed as Publican, Licenced Victuallers etc does not necessarily mean they owned the Pubs or Inns they ran, like Farmers most I have come across rented or leased, although I have found the longer Licensees stayed in the same place the more likely they did own the building Your problem finding Robert in 1901 is that he is transcribed incorrectly as COOPER, I have added a correction which will show in the index in a couple of weeks or so Name: Robert Cooper Age: 56 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1845 Relation: Head Spouse's Name: Annie Cooper Gender: Male Where born: Wallingford, Berkshire, England Civil parish: Clapcot Ecclesiastical parish: Wallingford St Mary the Virgin and All Hallows Town: Clapcot County/Island: Berkshire Country: England Registration district: Wallingford Sub-registration district: Wallingford ED, institution, or vessel: 4 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 146 Piece: 1140 Folio: 17 Page Number: 23 Household Members: Name Age Robert Cooper 56 Annie Cooper 57 RG13; Piece: 1140; Folio: 17; Page: 23. The father of Robert COPE who is listed in 1871 as farming 20 acres, was also enumerated as a Publican & Farmer so its possible he owned the 2 acres and the Robert farming the 20acres owned none but rented all of his The senior Robert b1814 dies in 1901 , his son b1844 dies 1906 and neither appear to have left a will Not that a lack of a will means there was no money of course but the sums left by Robert and Ernest are sizable The question remains where did the money come from, and where were brothers Robert & Ernest in 1911? Did they go abroad and make their fortune? (or rob a bank <vbg>) The wills for Robert & Ernest would be the best bet I would say Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hello Nivard > > I am indebted to you for your kind research on my behalf - very many > thanks. > > You present some interesting pointers. > > I recall seeing Robert as the 'cow man on Castle estate' and cannot now > seem > to find it.
