    3. Dear Karen, Thank you for your reply to my request, I do appreciate your kindness. James H on the 1891 census return was born ca 1867 - Ann Gray and James got married in 1870, would James born 1867 be illegitimate or is this Ann's second marriage? Thank you once again for your help, Have a lovely day, Regards, Karin. Dear Karen You can access the 1881 census at no cost (I beleive) on Ancestry.com. I've had a quick look on your behalf, and in 1881 the SMITH family were living at Maidenhead (registration district at that time would have been Cookham), parents James and Ann (he was a wheelwright) with children James 13, Ernest 10, Alvert 6 and Nelly 2. All the family were born in Maidenhead. From FreeBMD (www.freeBMD.com) a James SMITH and Ann GRAY were married in 1870 in the Cookham registration district Good luck with your research Best wishes, Karen . ----- Original Message ----- From: "Karin Serfontein" <kss@mweb.co.za> To: <BERKSHIRE@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 28, 2009 1:11 PM Subject: [BRK] Greetings from South Africa > > > > Dear List, > > I would like to know if someone can help me please with any information on > Frederick Smith born ca 1882? in Maidenhead Ecclesiastical Parish of St > Luke > (1901 census return) > Brothers James H Smith born 1867 > Albert E Smith born 1875 both born in Maidenhead St Luke sub-registration > of > Coocham. > > Who were the parents of the Smith brothers and what was the date of the > parents marriage please? > > If you can help it will be much appreciated. > > Thank you in advance, > > Regards, > > Karin Serfontein nee Smith > > > > > > __________ Information from ESET NOD32 Antivirus, version of virus > signature > database 4463 (20090928) __________ > > The message was checked by ESET NOD32 Antivirus. > > http://www.eset.com > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > BERKSHIRE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message > ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to BERKSHIRE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message __________ Information from ESET NOD32 Antivirus, version of virus signature database 4463 (20090928) __________ The message was checked by ESET NOD32 Antivirus. http://www.eset.com __________ Information from ESET NOD32 Antivirus, version of virus signature database 4463 (20090928) __________ The message was checked by ESET NOD32 Antivirus. http://www.eset.com

    3. Hi Karin, me again I thought I'd reply off list with other info I've found on this family. I subscribe to Ancestry.com which has all the UK censuses from 1841 to 1901, so this can give you info on James parents, and get you back another generation. In 1851 he was living in Maidenhead with his father Henry (a wheelwright and blacksmith) who was born in Goring, Oxfordshire, and his mother Jane Brewer (they may not have been married) who was born in Castle Combe, Wiltshire. James' siblings were Joseph 16, Elizabeth 13, Ann 10, Isaac 3. I can't find James in 1861 or 1871. Rather sadly, in 1891 there is a James Smith of the same age and born in Maidenhead who is a patient in the Moulsford Lunatic Asylum at Cholsey, Berkshire. No occupation is listed so I can't be sure this is your man. Hope this helps, do ask if you would like any other lookups in the censuses, I'm happy to help. 3. Hello Peter. Broadmoor Mental Asylum, at Crowthorne, Berkshire, was built in 1863, to replace the notorious Bethlehem (Bedlam) Mental Asylum in London. In 1948, it was taken over by the National Health Service to be used as a hospital for the criminally insane. So if your relative was detained in there before 1948, she was not necessarily a criminal, possibly just mentally unstable. The person I researched, he having died in there in the 1920's, was registered at Windsor Registry Office, so you might find that is the same for your Lucy. Bridget (Maidenhead, Berkshire).

    3. Hi list I wonder if someone can assist me in unravelling a mystery. Thomas Jones MILLS (b.1845) & Lydia Sarah MILLS (b.1848) were both born in Maidenhead. After a long, long search I have finally discovered that Thomas emigrated to Australia in the 1860's (possibly in search of gold). Of Lydia I can find nothing after 1851. In the census of that year she is shown living with her parents in Egham. Then nothing ! If anyone can help in tracking down poor Lydia I'd be immensely grateful. Regards Bryn (Mount Victoria, NSW , Australia ...... Where it's snowing this morning !!)

    3. G'day from Western Australia, Thanks to those that replied with helpful info. I also got a reply from the Berks records office and discovered some basic info in that Lucy actually lived until 1920 after taking up residence in 1884. She was conditionally discharged in 1903 but readmitted in 1907. I can probably get a copy of her admission register and I might also be able to make a request for pre 100 year release of information because I'm a direct relative. So within 12 hours of making the initial enquiry, I have heaps of information and can now search for the 19011 & 1911 census info and also her 1920 death record. However, should any BRK list members have additional ideas I'd appreciate it. Peter Holmes Western Australia. 3. Broadmoor was/is an asylum for the criminally insane. I don't know if it always was, but it certainly was in the 1950s when I lived in Sandhurst. Broadmoor is actually more in Crowthorne than in Sandhurst. If it was for the criminally insane back in the days of your Lucy's admission it is possible that there was a crime that she committed that you might find in the newspapers - perhaps in Lincolnshire? Or perhaps not. As an aside - I remember attending a musical put on by the more reliable patients at Broadmoor for about a week every year. They had an orchestra (small), made the sets and the costumes, and the same woman was always the star. The rumor (many folks in the village worked there) was that she had been the daughter of a very protective man, who bought her a pony. One day her pony threw her. Father was so upset that he shot the pony, whereupon the daughter, then in her teens, seized the gun and shot him. And was sent to Broadmoor. Story continued that she had been discharged as people became more understanding of what was or was not mental illness and concluded that she was sane, but that she could not cope with life outside, and asked to be let back in, and, fearing that she would do something harmful to someone and that the authorities would be held responsible, she was re-admitted. And every year was the star of the musical. 1. [BRK] Oxfordshire FHS meeting - Monday 28 September 2009
    2. All The next meeting of the Oxfordshire Family History Society will take place on Monday 28 September 2009 at the usual venue at Exeter Hall, Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1AB. Doors open at 7.15pm for coffee, help with both genealogy and computers, and the bookstall, exchange journals and the library. The subject of the talk is "The resources of the London (Hyde Park) Family History Centre". This will be presented by Sharon Hintze. The London (Hyde Park) Family History Centre is one of more than 4500 family history centres of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is the largest such centre outside of North America, and one of more than a hundred centres in the British Isles. It holds a good collection of finding aids and a significant collection of primary records, mostly on microfilm. Records are chiefly drawn from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. Our speaker Sharon Hintze is director of the London FHC, and hence is uniquely placed to introduce us to the resources available at the venue. She is a well-known speaker and lecturer on family history, and my guess is that this will be a presentation not to be missed ! All members, potential members and their guests are welcome. For directions as to how to get to the Exeter Hall, please see :- _http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ExeterHall.html_ (http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ExeterHall.html) For a list of future OFHS meetings, please see :- _http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html_ (http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html) Any queries, please contact me off-list. 3. Hi Paul The parishes where I've found the family so far have been Basildon, Arborfield & Tidmarsh which I think are in the south of the county. But I realise now that Basildon is right on the Oxfordshire border so they may even have originated from there. Thanks for your reply. Regards Kerrie > What part of Berkshire are you interested in ? 3. Hi Phil Many thanks for your detailed explanation of the Berkshire parishes and the IGI coverage. I've had a look at the Berkshire FHS website & will go ahead and get a few searches done of their databases. Hopefully I'll find a few of my missing families this way. I will also look at the Berkshire RO website for their coverage of parishes. Thanks again for your great help. Cheers Kerrie > Berkshire is quite well covered by the IGI - it has been suggested that > around 70% of pre-1837 baptisms and marriages are there.
