    2. Colleagues Following its unprecedented success, the hugely popular TV series "Who Do You Think You Are ?" launched a national history show a couple of years ago. The event was called :- "Who Do You Think You Are? 1. [BRK] John HUTT and Ann PEARMAN ( 1800 )
    2. >From Jackson's Oxford Journal, Saturday, March 8, 1800; Issue 2445. On Saturday Mr. Baron THOMSON and Mr. Justice LE BLANC opened their commission for holding the assizes for the county of Berks, at Reading, when John HUTT was tried for he wilful murder of Ann PEARMAN, and convicted, and executed on the Thursday following. In the evening of his trial, despairing of all hopes of mercy, the prisoner made a confession to the Chaplain of the perpetration of one of the most dreadful murders recorded in the annals of this country, and what added not a little to the horror of the crime was, that it was wholly unprovoked, and without any apparent object, and committed by a lad who had the appearance of not being above the age of 16.

    1. [BRK] JOHN PUSEY, fl 1749-1759, Abingdon
    2. Pete Dale
    3. Hello listers. I'm wondering whether anybody can help with either the baptism or marriage of John Pusey. In 1749 and 1759 his sons John and Richard respectively were baptised at St Helen's Abingdon, and his wife is recorded as Elizabeth. There is however no record of his baptism or marriage in the Abingdon area (by which I mean the parishes transcribed on the Oxfordshire cd Abingdon 01, including St Helen's and St Nicholas amongst others.) John and Richard continued to live in Abingdon and their families in general were baptised and married there; John and Elizabeth were buried there in 1785 and 1780. If anybody is able to track down John's earlier details, I would be extremely grateful (my partner is descended from Richard). Pete Dale

    1. [BRK] Oxfordshire FHS meeting - Monday 22 February 2010
    2. Colleagues The next meeting of the Oxfordshire Family History Society will take place on Monday 22 February 2010. It will be held at the usual venue at Exeter Hall, Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1AB. Doors open at 7.15 pm for coffee, help with both genealogy and computers, and the bookstall. The subject of the talk at 8.00pm is "The Wesleyan Methodist Historic Roll – an underused source for family historians", which will be presented by Richard Ratcliffe. I'm told that the presentation looks at the Wesleyan Methodist Historic Roll, which contains the names of over one million people who contributed to the Wesleyan Methodist Twentieth Century Fund between 1899-1904, and whose names can be found in fifty volumes at Westminster Methodist Central Hall. Richard's talk will include references to Volume 10, which contains the names of donors in the Oxford District. Richard Ratcliffe has been a member of Oxfordshire FHS since soon after its formation. After retiring as a primary school headteacher in 1995, he has served on the Methodist Council and also been part-time archivist at Westminster Methodist Central Hall, as well as taking family history classes, giving talks to family history societies and other groups and getting involved in the setting-up of the Family History Partnership. All members, potential members and their guests are welcome. For directions as to how to get to the Exeter Hall, please see :- _http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ExeterHall.html_ (http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ExeterHall.html) For a list of future OFHS meetings, please see :- _http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html_ (http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html) Any queries, please contact me. 2. Thankyou Bob, much appreciated. Jules In the St. Helens marriage index there is no John ABDY listed and there are no HAWKE marriages listed. Yet when one looks through the 1734 marriages, there they are: 1734 17 Feb ABDY John yeoman, Steventon HAWKES Mary Steventon So much for relying on the index! Here are Steventon baptisms: 1736 23 Nov ABDY Mary d John and Mary 1738 25 Feb ABDY John s John and Mary 1744 21 Oct ABDY James s John and Mary There are no other ABDY baptisms, nor any for HAWKE Here are the burials for Steventon: 1745 27 Feb ABDY Thomas of Clifton 1778 20 May ABDY Mary w of John There is no record of the banns in Harwell, as the transcript only beings in 1814 for these. In Clifton Hampden there are these burial entries: 1729 5 Nov ABDEY Mary d of Thomas and Amy 1740 4 Feb ABDEY Amy w of Thomas All of this info is taken from the CD transcripts put out by the Oxford FHS. I hope this is of some help to you. I don't have access to Brightwell. Bob Burns

I have followed the ABDY line meticulously so I thought that perhaps I would have better luck with the HAWKE people, Mary being the only one I have to go by LOL... If I am on the right track I have John's death as 15.4.1788, St. Agatha, Brightwell, Berkshire. They are both shown as "of Steventon". Mary was possibly buried 20th May 1778 St. Michaels and All Angels, Steventon, Berkshire. As Mary and John's banns were given out at Harwell, I am assuming that Anne ABDEY b. 1734, Harwell was their first daughter. They had three other children born in Steventon. For some reason I have put Culham in brackets. On checking my notes John and Mary's marriage was definitely in the year of 1734 sorry about that, I should have checked first.
