Hi Tony Many thanks for the links. I hadn't thought to check for Wills for the Hanson's as my Charles & Hannah Grover didn't have a bean! (Already looked for Wills for both of them and came up with nothing) Anyway I bought both of the Wills....very glad I did as the one for William Hanson didn't give me any clues what so ever but the one for John Hanson was much better .....and has solved my mystery!!!!! My Hannah Hanson has to be the daughter of William Hanson as John Hanson's daughter Hannah was named as Hannah Butler in his will.(I had already found her marriage on the IGI) I was already leaning toward William Hanson being her father based solely on circumstantial evidence but I needed that bit of real proof to be 100% sure. regards MOIRA ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tony Pottrell" <editor@pyroport.com> To: <berkshire@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 27, 2010 6:37 PM Subject: Re: [BRK] Help I'm Stuck! > Another angle may be to look for any surviving wills, if the family was > fairly well off. Another angle may be to look for any surviving wills, if the family was fairly well off. They can sometimes contain useful snippets relating to relationships within the family. Hi Walter There is no one answer I am afraid No site has all marriage records whatever they may suggest Some sites use Phillimores or Pallots indexes (many of which are free elsewhere) My suggestion would be to check the coverage of the various sites for the Counties / Parishes you are interested in , you will probably find that they don't cover them For earlier records I would suggest looking towards the family history societies for the County in question, many of which do paid searches in transcribed Parish Records or can supply transcripts on CD or on paper As they specialise in their Counties you will get more informed information than you will from any commercial outfit All the sites you mention will have a different content, so its a matter of checking which has the best coverage for you Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Has anyone seen a comparison of online subscriptions or can anyone > advise which are the best online subscriptions for > church records, marriage records and wills etc > i currently subscribe to ancestry.co.uk > i would like to subscribe to another to get more access to church > records (baptism and marr records) > to help me with my 15 year brickwall John Fish & Eliz .. ? in Clewer > windsor around 1720 > dont know where they came from so it may be best to search parish > records everywhere and all marr records for their origin > > I like the origins network from the society of genealogists in london > but I would rather wait a few days and get your advice from your > personal experience > thanks you in advance for your advice > > regards > Walter

For anyone who comes across Farmeberry as a place name I can confirm that this is referring to Farnborough in Berkshire. I think combined with the dialect and some scribes who couldn't spell there are some very peculiar place names to be found in old documents. I obviously upset someone with my innocent question. Will look else were for opinions. Ron There are no stupid questions but sometimes you get stupid answers IMHO I love Ancestry.co.uk I have been a member forever and have made contact through many other on the message boards, looked at family trees and of course trolled the indexes. I probably look at it every day. I do use other sites but only for the free component or short term fees, I use Find My Past to look at passenger lists (to Canada), 1911 census and burial index. You can look at some of the Find My Past registers for free but have to pay for the details. Pretty much all of my research is UK. Of course I look for anything new that is online. I have recently been helping to key and arbitrate the London Schools index and can see the vast amount of new records that will come online. Articles I have read in magazines always rates Ancestry very highly. If you research worldwide them you may need the Ancestry.com membership that covers a lot more but it is expensive. I wait until they give free access occasionally and then spend as much time as I can downloading data. Good Luck with your decision Margaret (Bowyer) Guest

I have another suggestion - familysearch.org is free and has hundreds of thousands of records. I actually did not see this suggestions on either list. Sometimes it just takes a bit of time for everyone on the list to read the list messages and respond. So, with one paid subscription and many free subscriptions, one can usually find most of what there is to be found on the web. I have subscriptions to both and find it easier to locate people in FindMyPast and then being able to see the details before viewing the actual image. But then I have found people in Ancestry that I have not been able to locate in the other. A lot of it depends on the transcribing. Garry: > Just coming up to renewing my subs to Ancestry.
