My Surname is Yates, i have been researching my family tree for about 10 or so years, i have gone back to 1766 Richard Yates Faringdon, actually i have gone back a few more generations but with solid proof of a direct ancestory. An American "cousin" emailed me the other day and mentions the Yate family in lyford and surrounding small villages/hamlets, and that seemed to awake my dim memory about Buckland Manor story of the mid 1600's. i have several questions 1. The "lord" of the manor was a man with a surname of YATE some websites it is indeed YATE but others it is YATES - does that make a difference? or is it the old spelling chestnut of surnames. 2. He had no heir but left his estate to hhis daughter abigail. Could there be other YATE/YATES family in the area ie cousins etc.? 3. if so could they be related to the faringdon YATES' 4. Many moons ago my grandfather always stated that we (along time ago) used to own most of Lechlade, could he of got a a family myth/legend wrong and it wasn't Lechlade it was indeed Buckland after all? or am i completely wrong about everything and there is no link at all. any help would be great Richard Yates

Hi Katie & Valma The marriage is there on the 23rd September 1856 at St Mary Islington Charles father is Charles both are gardeners Ann's father George LEES also a gardener Charles of full age a bachelor, Ann a minor & spinster Both gave address as 5 Suffolk Place Both signed their names G LEES & E LEES were the witnesses Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) Hello Valma Further to Peter's message, maybe Charles/they migrated to London England on the way to Australia. There are banns for a couple Charles HAWKINS and Ann LEES at St Mary Islington London on 7, 14 and 21 September 1856. Following that there is a note of the date Sept 22 1856. From others on the page, this is the date on which a certificate for the banns was issued, but it might also have been the date of marriage as well. Unfortunately, I have not yet found/doesn't appear to be the actual parish record of the marriage itself, which would have contained their fathers' names and occupations as well.

Free BMD have a reference to this couple's marriage. The reference is 3rd quarter/September quarter 1856 registration district Islington 1b 354. So Reference 3Q 1856 Islington 1b 354. If this is the appropriate marriage for your couple, it should similarly give both fathers' names and occupation, helping to home in on the family in the census records. If all this is fairly new to you, you might find it worth reading around the internet to find out more about the sources available to us family historians, on and offline. Maybe others on the list have a handy list of links or a good site to start on. Hi Daryll I also had a look at the London Gazette which is free to use online and that has a reference to when Alfred Major was knighted Gazette Issue 27745 20 Dec 1904 page 2 http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/ Hope that helps regards MOIRA
Hi Darryl Try Google Books. I had a look and there are some snippet references to your Sir Alfred Major which answer some of your questions. eg what he did and when he was Knighted. As Google Books lists the title of the book/s you may be able to find copies in a library so you can read the full entry, that might help you to further your research regards MOIRA ----- Original Message ----- From: "Darryl Simpson" <darryl.simpson@optusnet.com.au> To: <BERKSHIRE@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, August 22, 2010 3:39 AM Subject: [BRK] Sir Alfred Major > Hi All > > I am trying to find information on Sir Alfred Major. > I have him marring Ada Bertha Smetzer at The House of Her Britannic > Majesty`s Legation in Brussels in 1886 > > I have him and family on the 1891and 1901 Census in Cookham > I have Sir Alfred Major on the probate calendar 1907 > I found Bertha and daughter Alfreda Bertha on 1911 Census in Paddington, > London > I have Dame Bertha Major on the probate calendar 1938 > > The questions are 1. when and why and how did Alfred Major become a Sir > 2. 1. when and why and how did Alfred Major become a Sir if you look on the Cookham Dean blog site (google it) there is a list of residents for 1895 among other things. At this point he is not a knight. Contact the College of Arms to find out when he was knighted (again use a search engine) 2. Is there any information about the family`s life in Cookham: you have do your own research at the archives 3. Is there any thing about his working life, (on the census it has him working in the war office): you have to do your own search at Kew or try National Archives online (maybe best starting point) 4. Is the Alfred Major Recreation Ground named after him and was this land originally owned by him: you could have found this out by going to the Cookham Dean site: yes and no 5. What is or was The House of Her Britannic Majesty`s Legation in Brussels: a legation is an Embassy - he was clearly some sort of military attache I do not know about access to berkshire archives but the others I have mentioned will all either search for a fee or refer to you genealogist to do it for you. It's always worth reading the collection notes on Ancestry. They appear at the bottom of the page if you scroll right down when you're searching each collection. Usually the notes tell you where the originals are held, and sometimes you get a link to the repository so you can order a document.
