Jonathan, I managed to find both my G-G-G-Grandparents' wills online and downloaded through PRO for a small charge. Can't remember the site as it was over 7 years ago and bookmarks lay idle on a hard drive somewhere. I too have downloaded copies of Berkshire and Suffolk Wills in the past via the A2A website, now fully incorporated into the TNA website. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/ I think I have paid GBP 3.50 for downloads. Jonathan Have you tried these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Creemer_Clarke http://www.trinityabingdon.org.uk/triabou.htm and several others if you Google him. Hi List members, My current research includes several families in the Drapery trade. I would like some assistance in understanding the dymamics/structure of the trade so I have a reasonable idea of my research area when seeking family members. This is what I have found so far : The main center of activity is Abingdon. [John Creemer CLARKE and related businesses ]. Did CLARKE's have remote distribution points or warehouses ? My ancestors and related families have members in the trade living in several communities. These include East Ilsly, Hatfield, Cheshunt. Were there others ? If so where ? How far did John Creemer CLARKE's fabric empire spread ? This data should help me trace missing Twigs :) ( There are several relatives who married then vanished. ) Looking forward to your input. Cheers Jonathan in Toronto, Canada
Hi Robert and Nivard, Thanks to you both for your input. Earlier when I had written : " My ancestor William GENTRY died in Abingdon in 1855. Can anyone please check if he left a Will ? " it was my hope that a list member had, or had easy access to, a Probate Index that included the Parish of St. Helen, Abingdon. I had half expected to be referred to the Oxfordshire list :) More questions to follow. Cheers Jonathan in a cool Toronto, Canada
Nivard, you are correct. I will shortly correct the Genuki page to change 1838 to 1858. Thank you. Jonathan, read Nivard's advice, not mine! Hi Robert Post *1858* wills can be ordered from hmcourt-service Before that probate was dealt with by the Ecclesiastical courts so could be in one of a number of places depending upon where it was proved (if there was one of course) The link you posted would appear to be pointing to your hard drive? Genuki has this on probate http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/Probate.html And for Berkshire http://www.berkshirerecordoffice.org.uk/familyhistory/sources.htm There are a number of informative research guides on the National Archives amongst them this one <http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/wills-and-probate-records.htm> Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Jonathan, post-1838 wills can be ordered from > http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/cms/1183.htm > > It may also be useful to look here about probate in general: > file:///D:/GenUKI/BRK/index.html#Probate > > Robert Monk > > On 09/12/2010 17:35, jgentry@bell.net wrote: >> >> Hi list members, >> >> My ancestor William GENTRY died in Abingdon in 1855. >> >> Can anyone please check if he left a Will ? >> >> TIA >> Jonathan in Toronto, Canada.

The word 'Leckhampstead' caught my eye in this email. A book 'Leckhampstead Village yesterday and today' by Elizabeth Vera Setchell has been published recently. Mrs Setchell spent part of WW2 as a pupil at Chaddleworth school, and later lived for years in Leckhampstead where she was secretary of the village hall committee and the WI. It is a mixture of history and memories contributed by a number of people, with a number of photographs, and information about a number of families who were in the village in late 19th and early to mid 20th century, including my wife's THOMAS ancestors. It is published by Jade Technical Services of 18 Oak Tree Road,Thatcham, Berks. email books@jadets.com ISBN is 978-0-9567034-0-8 It has 290 pages I have no commercial interest in this publication. Hello Jim I don't have the WARD you mentioned , but if you are interested I do have a .jpg image of a marriage between William WARD and Ann NEW, 17 July 1762 from the Chaddleworth PRs . I also noticed a number of WARDS in the Brightwalton PRs that where inadvertantly photographed while researching my own family. If you would like me to send you copies contact me directly. Then again I may have already sent them to you.
