    2. Diane Marcotte
    3. Hello. My GG Grandfather Thomas BICKERDIKE was born, according to his tombstone, on 18 Jan 1816 in York, England. However an article about his son Robert who was a Canadian Member of Parliament states that Thomas was born in Berkshire. He emigrated to Canada in the 1820s and was living in Kingston, Upper Canada (now the province of Ontario) when he married Agnes COWAN on the 31 Oct 1842. They had a son Robert on the 17 Aug 1843 in Kingston and then they moved to Lower Canada (now the province of Quebec.) I have details on all their children, etc but cannot find any information that would give me Thomas' parent's names. Unfortunately few passenger lists have survived from that era. I cannot locate any record of him in York and I am at a loss to know how to trace his birth/christening record. (He was Protestant.) Any suggestions you may have would be most welcome. Thank you. 1. [BRK] Cruttwell / Crutwell of Wokingham
    2. R.E. Scales
    3. Hello everyone. I would appreciate some guidance / suggestions with the following situation. On 13 November 1800 I have the marriage of John Perkins and Ann Cruttwell in Wokingham. According to the book “ The History of the Cruttwell Families of Wokingham (Berks) and Bath “ by Dr. Harry Athill Cruttwell that was printed in 1933, Ann is the daughter of Robert Crutwell and Sarah Bunce. But that Ann was, according to the LDS records, was bapt. 09 December 1785 which seems young to be married at age 15. There are 3 other candidates: Ann Cruttwell 16 January 1767 to John and Sarah Ann Crutwell 13 October 1775 to Thomas and Ann Ann Crutwell 16 December 1775 to John and Ann Any suggestions as to where I might find additional information that would reveal the parents of the Ann Crutwell who married 13 November 1800 would be greatly appreciated. All events took place in Wokingham ( however it seems John and Ann Perkins moved to Hertfordshire where William Henry Perkins was christened 20 November 1801 at the St. Andrew's Church in Herford ( the aforementioned book sez that John and Ann married in Hertfordshire but I cannot find any record of a Perkins/Cruttwell marriage in Hertfordshire, however I have found a marriage in Wokingham ) ). 2. >From London Chronicle ( Semi-Annual ) ( London, England ), June 23, 1764 - June 26, 1764; Issue 1172. COUNTRY NEWS. Reading, June 23. This afternoon, about two o'clock, we had a tempest of thunder and lightning, which was very remarkable. The claps succeeded each other incessantly for near an hour, and seemed to run into one another like the ignited flashes of Aurora Borealis. During the tempest, we had very heavy rains; and in the middle of it a violent storm of hail, in which the stones, or rather pieces of ice, were so large as to measure from two to four inches in circumference, and some of them flat, and almost as broad as a half crown. We hear from Shinfield, in this county, that the house of Farmer MEARING received very great damage by the heavy storms of hail, that fell there this day; the windows being almost all broke to pieces: the house of Mr. CREASE , in that neighbourhood suffered the same fate; and the corn round that part of the country is almost entirely destroyed, so that we apprehend many of the farmers will be ruined. At Whitley, about two miles from hence, the storm was so violent, and the hail stones so large, that the corn on the land occupied by Mr. KNIGHT, as well as on other farms, is almost entirely cut in pieces. Many of the stones, we are told, measured from five to seven inches in circumference.

    3. Update on the 1881 Census ..... Eliza has now been found. No birthplace was entered for Eliza SMITH, and if I'd bothered to trace her children one by one, I'd have found her quite easily with her son, Frank N. Smith and his wife Alice at 1 Alpha Cott, Hornsey, Middlesex. So now it's just the 1841 census to pin down. Regards to all, Jon

    3. Hi listers, I'd love to hear from anyone connected to the family of William Samuel SMITH. According to the 1881 Census, he was born about 1825 at Greenham. He is recorded as a "farmer of 164 acres employing 3 men," and is living at Mayford Wells, Woking. He is also recorded as "married" and although I have his wife Eliza in previous and later censuses, she is not with him in 1881. So far I've had little joy in finding out where she'd bunked off to. <G> She is also proving hard to find in the 1841 census where she is 13 years old. I do know though that she is not with her parents, Edward & Eliza. William Samuel SMITH and Eliza NIXEY were married in the Southampton area in early 1847, and their children were born in various areas of Southern England, including Binfield, Berkshire; Hannington, Hampshire; and Slough, buckinghamshire. Eliza was the niece of my 2 x great grandfather, Joseph NIXEY. Kindest regards to all, Jon

    3. Hi All, Thanks for all the help! The point of David Birch's second marriage was crucial, and as Nivard pointed out, should contain the name of David's father, result: 26th March 1853 – West Meon Church:David Birch, aged 60, a widower, a labourer, of West Meon, father Richard Birch a labourer, married Mary Ann Field, aged 34, a spinster, a domestic servant, of West Meon, father Thomas Field, a labourer by banns. Witnessed by John Birch and Ann Field. So a long-lasting brickwall has been demolished and another step back in the generations, very grateful for the help! Who knows there might be one of you out there who is related? Seasons Greetings, Den

Mr Clarke gave a lot of the money and effort towards its...' But I cannot see it on this page, and the website looks as if it is broken, so it looks as if you may have to contact them for more information. 'There were 2 stormy elections in 1874 and 1880 at both of which John Cremer Clarke was returned, being the last Member in the Borough, which was merged into the County in 1885'. On another page -'The Mayoral Badge was presented in 1879 by Mt J.C.Clarke.....' These excerpts are from my copy of 'A History of Abingdon': J Townsend M.A. it is an out of print copy, but you just may be able to get hold of it or use inter-library exchange. You could also learn more by contact with ... Abingdon and Area Archaeological and Historical Society. ... www.aaahs.org.uk/contacts.html John Cremer Clarke also seems to have given money to Abingdon School [Royse's Boys School] and gave money for the Congregational Chapel to be built in the Square. It seems that he is buried at Springfield Road Cemetery, Abingdon. There has been until quite recently cloth trade in Abingdon. I would like some assistance in understanding the dymamics/structure of the trade so I have a reasonable idea of my research area when seeking family members. This is what I have found so far : The main center of activity is Abingdon. [John Creemer CLARKE and related businesses ]. Did CLARKE's have remote distribution points or warehouses ? My ancestors and related families have members in the trade living in several communities. These include East Ilsly, Hatfield, Cheshunt. Were there others ? If so where ? How far did John Creemer CLARKE's fabric empire spread ? This data should help me trace missing Twigs :) ( There are several relatives who married then vanished. ) Looking forward to your input.
