The one you're referring to is Roy D. Berkheiser who married Catherine Mae Aughenbaugh. Both of them lived and died in Lebanon, PA. They had 3 children that I know of. They are Janice Mae, Roy, and Doris. There's two other Leroy Berkheisers on the tree but its possible they're the same person. The one Leroy married Mary Melnick and had 3 kids. My gg grandfather (Henry S. Kunkle) and John Henry Kunkle were brothers. John Henry Kunkle was married to Lavina L. Bargahiser -- one of Levi's daughters. Levi was born in Norfolk, VA. He came to Ohio and married, Susan Eshelman who was born/raised in Licking County, Ohio. Immediately following their marriage in 1819, they moved to Madison Twp, Williams County, Ohio which is the northwestern most county in the state. Levi & Susan had a total of 5 children -- 3 girls and 2 boys. The boy's names were Jacob and Washington. I don't know the girl's names other than Lavina. Jacob still lived in the Shelby, Ohio area at the turn of the century. Washington had moved to Williams County, Ohio even before Lavina moved there. I have quite a bit of descendant info off of Lavina L (Bargahiser) Kunkle but none for Jacob or Washington. It's probably out there ! in census data if you'd like to look. Hi everyone! Fall is finally in full swing in Northcentral Indiana with the leaves slowly coming off the trees. Some of the trees are still surprisingly green. Looks like the rakes and leaf blowers are coming out of the shed this week, but our trusty rusty 25 year old Simplicity riding lawnmower is still in the shop for repairs. Sigh. Nothing new to report this week except I finished up going through the SSDI listing for all of the Berkheisers I could find including some other people I didn't have dates for. I hope to have another newspaper article from Robert "Rick" Berkheiser for all of you to read next week. Its an interesting one! Also this past week, I'm going through the other databases available at Ancestry. Found quite a few living Berkheisers I didn't know about. Jeff! Hi everyone! The new file has just been uploaded for the coming week. Not much of anything new to report except that I ran across a couple of new names from the updated SSDI index at Ancestry and the Message Boards. Mostly this past week, I was backtracking on SSDI to make sure I didn't make any mistakes from the previous week. So far, I found one mistake that was entered wrong. I wanted to get through SSDI before I progressed through the HUGE stack of stuff, so I would have a better "road map" for entering and connecting data. While looking for somebody else, I accidentally found another Dr. Berkheiser I didn't know about. Hey! Our family did pretty good with three doctors. :-) Drs. Elven James, Arthur, and now Arthur's son Samuel Berkheiser. This information comes from two of Gregory's board messages. Also I need to dig up an old church directory for my church to see what Kim Bauer's son's name was. Not certain but think it was Justin. Hi ervyone! I trust all of you had a good week with the up and down temps as Fall rolls along. I've just completed another update of the Tree on Rootsweb where I decided to merge Berkhaus/Berkheiser file with the main one so it would be easier to track both groups. I was keeping them as separate files but it was becoming difficult to switch back and forth plus the other file wasn't up online either. Now it is. The Berkhaus/Berkheiser file is the one Thomas Berkheiser sent me a few years ago where I converted it to my Generations Millenium Edition family tree program. Its also in a back issue of BERKHEISER NOTES. Also this past week, I've been truckin' along through the Social Security Death Index. Finding a lot of missing data there and its reflected in this week's changes and additions. My HUGE stack is of stuff is actually starting to shrink. :-) But I've still got a long ways to go. If you sent me something some time ago, please be patient with me. It'll show up eventually. I have a stack of papers literally 2 foot high plus several floppies filled with information. From the Robert "Rick" Berkheiser Collection.---Rick B] GREAT GRANDFATHER IS GUEST AT PARTY Jeanne-lou, curly haired daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Berkheiser, of 615 Broad Street, on Sunday passed her second bithday anniversary, and the event was made memorable by a gathering of little folks and their elders. The juvenile celebrant received a shower of post cards and personal felicitations to say nothing of a number of fine gifts of useful articles. Probably the most delighted guest in the entire crowd was Jeanne-lou's great-grandfather, Harry Wengert. Others who enjoyed the festivities were: Mr. and Mrs. Harry Shay and children, Eleanor, Larry and Dennis; Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Englehart and children, Thomas, Jacob and Bud; Lucille and Kenneth Bender, and Jeanette and Jack Albright.

BERKHEISER SUCCOMBED TO INJURIES AT HOSPITAL Bullet Fired by Arthur Newman Proved Fatal--World War Discussion Terminated in Fight--Newman's Story Corroborated by Others of the Party. Robert Berkheiser, of 334 Pershing Avenue, who was shot in the abdomen, by Arthur Newman, in a squable, early on Sunday morning, at the home of"Bud" Brown, at the corner of Second street and Pershing Avenue, died at 3 o'clock, Tuesday afternoon, at the Good Samaritan Hospital. Although everything possible was done by the physicians to save the man's life, the bullet created such havoc in the zigzag course in Berkheiser's body, that efforts to restore the victim were fruitless. Berkheiser Succombs to Injuries at Hospital (Continued from Page One) way, and the members of the party sobered up, the police have what they believe to be the real story incident to the shooting. Newman Corroborated Chief of Police Cyrus Nye says that Newman's story of the affair is corroborated in most details by other members of the party, although minor points will have to be cleared up at the preliminary hearing on Friday afternoon, or at the trial at court. Newman says the party drank elderberry wine, and some of the men were under the influence. There was discussion of various matters, including the Irish problem and also the late World War, as several of the men present were overseas with the American Army. Should be Shot Newman told the police that someone said that "all the Irish, Dutch and French" should be shot, the remark being made with profane epithets which aroused Newman's blood, as he is of French descent. When he resented the remark a fight ensued, and Newman's black eye exhibited after the arrest, showed that he was not alone in handing out compliments. As the exchange of blows made a racket and there was danger for all present, the entire party, it appears, scampered out into the open in front of Brown's house, and the fight was renewed. It was here that the shooting took place. All Were Present According to Newman, the story told by one of the party that he and Berkheiser had left the place on friendly terms and that the fight occurred when they were alone was all bosh. According to his story to the police the entire party was present. Brown's Story This version is also corroborated by Brown himself, who stated to Chief Nye, that when the party ran pell mell from the house he closed the door, expecting his friends to go home, but when the fight was renewed and he heard the shot, he opened the door again, and then saw Newman with the revolver, and before he could close the door again Newman pointed the weapon at him, evidently fearing that Brown intended some retaliation. Brown had no such intention, however, and when he saw what had happened, he hitched his horse to a sort of buck-board wagon with which he does business, and hurried both men to the Good Samaritan Hospital. The police, later put Newman under arrest and took him from the hospital to the jail, as it was found that he was not seriously hurt. Victim 36 Years Old. Robert Berkheiser, of 334 Pershing Avenue, the victim of the shooting fray, early Sunday morning in Pershing Avenue, was aged 36 years and had lived in this city practically all his life. He was employed by his brother, George Berkheiser, for a number of years, and was well known throughout the city. He was a member of the Swatara Tribe of Red Men of this city, and was active in lodge affairs. He leaves his mother, Mrs. Emma Berkheiser, a son, Robert, Jr., two brothers, George and Edward, both of this city. The step-brothers, Rank and Harvey Bucks, of Reading and Womelsdorf, respectively, are also left.

After spending the evening at the residence of "Bud" Brown on Pershing Avenue, near Second street, in the company of s [torn page] seven male companions, Robert Berkheiser, of 384 Pershing Avenue was shot and probably fatally wounded, on his way home in company with Arthur Newman, of South Eighth street, and Morris Keath, of 438 Broad street, this city. The men had left the house, and had proceeded but a short distance along Pershing Avenue, when it is alleged, they quarrelled, and a fight resulted, in which, the police state, Newman drew a revolver and shot Berkheiser in the stomach. According to other members of the party, Keath, who was a few steps behind the two men, rushed up and shoved Newman aside, causing him to fall. Keath immediately proceeded to unarm Newman by kicking the gun from his hand, to prevent any further shooting. Bullet in Stomach. As soon as the shots were heard, several men, who were still at the house, ran to the scen at once and discovered Newman and Berkheiser lying in the road. A team belonging to Brown was secured and the two men were taken to the Good Samaritan hospital, where it was found that a bullet had entered Berkheiser's body below the heart, pierced the stomach and lodged in his liver, and Newman was suffering from a badly bruised eye, evidently received in the supposed fight. Newman in Jail. Chief of Police Cyrus Nye, in company with District Attorney Dawson G. Light and County Detective Aaron Sattazahn, on Sunday morning, made investigations and Newman, suffering with only minor bruises, was taken to the county jail, where it is alleged he admitted to the shooting. Information was made before Alderman R. L. Miller and a hearing has been fixed for Friday afternoon, at two o'clock, when Newman will be heard on a charge of shooting with intent to kill. The police have the names of the entire party and all witnesses will be present at the hearing. In Critical Condition. Late reports from the Good Samaritan Hospital, where Berkheiser was taken immediately after the shooting, state that his condition is critical with few hopes being held out for his recovery. Hi again everyone! I was going over some stuff that Lynn Vondran sent sometime ago on the Berkheisers from a book she extracted from that contains information from Summer Hill, Schuylkill Co., PA. When I was in Summer Hill Cemetery in 2004, I located a tombstone for Gebeine Berkheiser, 1754-1838. I found this same one in Lynn's notes and turns out this is really Maria Magdalena (Lehr) Berkheiser. Just goes to show you I'm lousy at German so the following will be corrected in my next update. That trip to Summer Hill was a fast one since we arrived late in the afternoon after a series of wrong turns and the sky was turning ugly. I'm surprised my pictures turned out as well as they did. The complete phrasing I probably didn't note was "hier ruhen die gebeine von" which means, "Here rests the bones of". Gebeine is obviously not a girl's first name. Color me stupid on this one! :-) Rick B

Hi everyone! Here's another obit I found on my last trip to Ft. Wayne. The cemetery mentioned we visited a couple of years ago. I was actually surprised this item appeared in the Ft. Wayne papers since Fulton Co. and Allen Co. are almost at opposite ends of the state. Sometimes it pays to check those bigger city papers. Rick B -------------------- "Journal-Gazette", Ft. Wayne, IN, February 17, 1990, page 5A ROCHESTER: Myron Z. Berkheiser, 81, died at 6:05 a.m. Friday at Life Care Center, Rochester. He retired as a self-employed grocer after 46 years and was a World War II Army Veteran. He was past president Woodland Hospital board of trustees and twice president of of Rochester Kwanis. Surviving are his wife, Helen M.; a daughter, Nancy Sue of Fort Wayne; and a brother, Herschel of Palo Alto, Calif. Services at 2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Rochester. Calling from 2 to 8 p,m. today at Zimmerman Brothers Funeral Home, Rochester and one hour before services Sunday at the church. Burial in IOOF Cemetery, Rochester. Memorials to church.

Hi everyone! I just typed up this obituary just now so I'm sharing it with all of you. I made a copy of this from the microfilm on my last trip to the Allen County Public Library in Ft. Wayne, IN last May. If all goes well, I'll make another trip there this coming May. :-) I'm finally going through my findings from that trip as I work my way through my HUGE stack of stuff. I had no idea what I'd find there so on the next trip I'll be better prepared with my notes. Rick B -------------------- "News-Sentinel", June 6, 1988, page 6A Isabel Terry Berkheiser, 79, died Saturday at home. The Convoy, Ohio, native lived in Fort Wayne most of her life. She retired in 1971 as a nurse at Parkview Memorial Hospital after 21 years, was a member of Parkview Nursing Alumni and St. Jude's Catholic Church, and the widow of Harold A., who died in 1975. Surviving are daughters, Julia Davis and Jeanette Boerger, and a son, Jerry, all of Fort Wayne; sisters, Vondale Kreachbaum of Sarasota, Fla., and Dorothy Hamilton of Palmetto, Fla.; and eight grandchildren. Services are 11:30 a.m. tomorrow in D.O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Ave., and at noon in the church, with burial in IOOF Cemetery, New Haven. Calling is 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the funeral home. Preferred memorials are gifts to the church.
