Born Sept. 12, 1936, in Lowndes County, Mrs. Hughes was the daughter of the late John Hughes and the late Mary Helen Green Ellington. She was a homemaker, a member of Sardis Baptist Church and founder of Christmas in Dixie, which was held each season from 1982 to 1997 in Crawfordville. Mrs. Hughes is survived by her husband, Earl W. Bennett of Crawfordville, two daughters and sons-in-law, Emily and June Rutherford of Crawfordville and Judy Gentry and David Skinner of Crawfordville; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Steve Bennett of Valdosta, Joe Bennett of Madison, Greg and Shirley Bennett of Fort Valley, and Ken and Hope Bennett of Madison; two sisters, Leona Stanley of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mary Ruth Weaver of Orlando, Fla.; four brothers, John W. Hughes of Live Oak, Fla., George W. Hughes of Nashville, Bennie Ellington of Milledgeville, and Bill Ellingt! on of Crawfordville; and 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2006, at Carter Cemetery.
