Later, Thomas Jefferson brought him back to America, where he served as a cook while Thomas Jefferson was Secretary of State in Philadelphia in 1792. Thomas Jefferson gave him his freedom 1796. James Hemings went north but killed himself in Philadelphia in 1801.
