I'm a descendant of the PA/Dewitt Co., IL Aquila Bennett. I would think there's a likely connection between the lines, though, as it is a distinctive name and origins are the same (PA)... Good luck to you, and if I run across anything pertaining to your Canada Aquila I'll be sure to post it HERE for you! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. However, there are no other links or pieces of evidence out there relating to Jacob's origins, so I'd tend to call it "just enough" corroborating evidence. The only conflict I've ever found has been an non-sourced OneWorldTree listing that had his father as "Derrick Bennett". Derrick was the name of one of Jacob's sons who's age is mistakenly transcribed as 85 rather than 35 on one census, so I suspect that's how that researcher came to that conclusion. In Ashbridge, Jacob is said to have "had property" in Iowa. It's worth noting that, at the time, the only real Bennett presence in nascent Iowa were descendants of Jacob. Jacob is credited for practically founding Madison County (of "The Bridges of..." fame) and building up its infrastructure. Even today, there are still hundreds of Bennetts local to the Winterset, Iowa area, and the Bennett Cemetery in that county is _full_. The original log cabin built by Jacob and his son Andrew still stands in Winterset. I've got some pictures of it, here: http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=andrew and bennett&w=93723338@N00 Bernice Gosden, who posted her connection to Isaac Bennett on OneWorldTree, mentions something interesting: "Issac and his brother William were sons of an Issac Bennett (grandfather who returned to England) who is said to have come from England, but my family were always told that we, the Bennetts, were Irish." That's extremely coincidental: The Jacob Bennett family members that I know all claim Irish heritage, without any proof (part of the reason why this connection is so important). I have been trying to prove that "Iowa Jacob" Bennett is the brother of Aquilla Bennett of Brothersvalley, Somerset Co, PA. I unfortunately have not been able to trace the Bennett line any further back than the late 1700's, however per Aquilla's granddaughter: **Jacob moved to Iowa & owned a large tract of land **Aquilla's father (Issac) was killed & scalped by Indians **Isaac's father left the family in America & went back to England And the search continues! If you are a descendant of Jacob perhaps you have heard of these stories through your family line? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You mentioned Sarah Hassinger and I KNEW we had a connection... I am in the Dewitt County area of IL, as were some of the family I am currently researching. Chiefly the Millers (of Clinton, Lane, Dewitt, Maroa, Bloomington), and the Bennetts, as a result of one of my Millers (Frank Theodore Miller) marrying a Rosa Bennett on November 11, 1900, in Dewitt, IL. I have that Rosa (born 1873?) was the daughter of Aquilla Bennett (b. 1831) and Sarah M. Hassinger (b. 1837). I'd be interested in knowing more about Rosa's family... brothers and sisters, Aquilla'a lineage, etc. One curious thing: Rosa Bennett had a FIRST daughter (out of wedlock?? I've found no previous marriages...), Grovie, or Grova, that she sent to live with her parents (Aquilla and Sarah: 1910 census shows Grova living with them, they in their 70's, Grova at 17... also, that an "Emmanuel J. Bennett" and family (wife Emma, children Grace, Marion and Minor(sp?)) must have lived next door??) when she, Rosa, married our Frank Theodore Miller (whom I am also looking for lineage on). Frank and Rosa Bennett Miller's children were Oren R., Nina (married my great uncle, a Bloomington Fireman then Policeman, Les Larison in 1953), Ruth (married my grandfather, farmer Joseph Henry Franklin, in 1932 or 1933) and Genevieve. There may have been more, but that's all I've been able to locate, using our family history and census records... I'd be interested in sharing GEDCOMS with you, if you'd like, and any and all info you can spare on the Bennetts connected to my Dewitt, IL (or Lane, or Clinton, or Maroa, or Dewitt County, etc.) Millers! PLEASE reply HERE (for any others interested), AND copy to my email(shear@mchsi.com) in case I don't get back here for another 4 years!! Coincidence? I did a quick search for your Clara Fox. I did find one age 27 living as a servant in the 1901 census for Keynsham. She was born in Cardiff Wales. Do you know if your Grandfather had any siblings? Maybe Arthur? Did your Grandfather retain his birth name? What was his adopted name? Did he use his birth father's name on his marriage cert. or his adopted father's?
