Author: tunnelm1 Surnames: Brown, Bennett Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bennett/9570.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I don't THINK that your website addresses the branch of the Bennetts who were in Middlesex Co., VA (versus Isle of Wight and Surry Co., VA) and who were ALSO from Wilvescomb, Somerset, England. Most charts seem to show that these two lines were/are related. There was an early William Bennett in this "Middlesex line" who married a Mary Smith (in the 1500s or 1600s, as I recall). In 1805, my ggg-grandfather John Brown (born about 1785) married a Mary Bennett in Middlesex Co., VA. Mary was the daughter of a Mrs. Winney Bennett (probably born about 1765-1770), but we do not know the given name of Winnie's Bennett husband....but we know that died before 1798, when Winnie remarried to a James Owen. Winnie had a son named Smith Bennett, and Smith Bennett named his first son William Bennett (so MAYBE Winnie's husband was also a William Bennett). Smith Bennett of Middlesex Co., VA also attended to the estate of a John Bennett in the 1820s (this John Bennett MAY have lived in Essex Co., VA earlier...there was a Bennett or two on the 1810 Essex census, as I recall). There was an Elizabeth Bennett on the 1783 Essex Co., VA tax list (she was the only Bennett "head of household" listed in Essex Co., VA in 1783, and I suspect that she was a widow). I can't help but wonder if Mrs. Winnie Bennett's husband was related to this Elizabeth Bennett (maybe Mrs. Eliz! abeth Bennett was his mother). There are a couple of older records in Essex Co., VA that mention Bennetts (a Richard Bennett in the 1730s, and a William Bennett in the 1750s). Anyway, I certainly would not be too surprised in my ggg-grandmother Mrs. Mary (Bennett) Brown (also born circa-1785) was a descendant of your overall Bennett family, but I can't seem to find any information that would make the "connection."
