Author: SamMozley Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bennett/535.578.2.1.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: No, I don't have a William born around 1823 in my records, but the name William is very common among Bennetts and since at least three different Bennett men, probably related to each other, came to Virginia before 1630, it would almost be surprising to find Bennetts who were NOT from Virginia. Those branches have spread to almost every southern and Midwestern state, so your quest will be, as mine is, complex. However, Virginia posts a lot of colonial-period records on line, so I encourage you to keep trying. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. She lived an incredibly full life and had stories that would thrill us as we were growing up about her family and the days of old. Those stories were taken too fast though as she had lost her place in this world 20 years ago to senile dementia. She will be buried next to her husband John Alden Heist in Mt. Dora, Lake County, Florida. As she would have said... "The Old Grey Mare... she ain't what she used to be... ain't what she used to be... ain't what she used to be.... My GGGFa was William H. Bennett born about 1823, probably in KY. Married in 1855 to Jane Howarth of England. I find William in the 1870, 1880 census but have no information about his earlier years, parents, or siblings. The 1880 census gives his parents' birthplaces as VA. Author: jmfreed Surnames: Bennet Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bennett/9661/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Does any reader know the Bennet (apparently one t, not two t's) ancestry of the newly appointed U.S senator from Colorado, Michael F. Bennet? (He is replacing Ken Salazar.) Michael F. Bennet was formerly the very successful superintendent of the Denver Colorado schools. The only "early background" information (but no ancestral information) that I can readily find is that Bennet earned his bachelor's degree in history with honors from Wesleyan University (Connecticut) and his law degree from Yale Law School, where he was the Editor-in-Chief of The Yale Law Journal. I'm very curious to find out if this Michael F. Bennet has any family connection whatsoever to Hiram Pitt Bennet, Colorado's first territorial representative to the U.S. House, and the person who was instrumental in establishing the U.S. Mint at Denver. If you are part of the Witham-Bennett family, then we are definitely cousins (my father, Thomas Bennett, was the only one of the Ohio branch to leave and eventually venture west). Though this is definitely a hobby with me, I believe our ancestor, John Bennett, was actually born in Woodstock, Wyndham, CN. in 1730 and was married to Hannah Bridges in 1764 in York, York Co., Maine. He may have had a previous marriage. They had two sons. John Clermont Bennett was born in 1764/65 and married Olive Witham. James Bennett was born on Dec 8, 1766 and married Olive's sister, Catherine (which makes my grandparents second cousins). We haven't been able to trace the Bennett line back further than this; nor have we been able to find information on his death at sea. I would really appreciate anything else you might discover. Author: liannemurp Surnames: Bennett Hogg Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bennett/9660/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Wonder if anyone could help with information on an elusive branch of my family in the USA. I can't seem to find them before their marriage in 1872 no matter how hard I look and I just know there has to be something. (Both spellings Bennett & Bennet are used in the records I have) Henry Francis Bennet (b. c1850) and Eliza Hogg (b. c1847) were married in Manhattan, NY on 2nd April 1872, residence at the time is given as 285 Mott St, NY. Although I can't find them on the USA census returns for 1870. There is some confusion over Henry's place of birth. On 1881 UK census is Liverpool, UK, on 1891 UK census is Pine Bluff, Arkansas and on 1901 UK census is Co. Mayo, Ireland!!!! His parents according to his marriage cert (although difficult to decipher) are Robert Bennet and Susan McGuire/McGurer?) Eliza is always born in Liverpool, UK. Her parents (according to near illegible marriage cert) are John Hogg and Sarah McKal? Their eldest daughter, Isabella was born in America , (although confusion between NY and NJ) c1873 according to her age on the various census returns and on her marriage cert which I have a copy of. Their second child Louisa was born in Liverpool on the 22nd June 1874. The third child William was also born in Liverpool in 1876. Any info of the families in the USA (not sure when they arrived as yet) or a record of a birth for Isabella would be greatly appreciated. They must have travelled back to the UK between 1873 and June of 1874 but can't as yet find a record of this. thanks Lianne Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I would like to know how your Jesse fits in, or in other words. why he is not in W.C.'s Will. However, I will always be interested in anything you find about our common ancestors, and will share my findings with you. For example, there is good documentation of our William Columbus's Revolutionary War service in VA artillery and the Va (!) navy boat Liberty, one of the most active American vessels in the Chesapeake throughout the War. Author: ruthannebennett Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bennett/535.578.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I totally agree about confusion with this Bennett line. There are two un-related Bennett families in Pittsylvania County, VA. The key to this line lies with the Dodson connection. There is a 2-volume book on the Dodson family. I am not at all sure if this family is part of the Jamestown Bennetts. It seems likely that William Columbus's father is John, son of Elizabeth Rice and William Bennett. William was born Oct. 16, 1691. This is from the Pittsylvania Co. Bennett "historian." The last time we talked Donald Bennett's email was Archidon2@aol.com Bartley is Bartholomew. Census records, marriage, land deeds, etc. in Louisiana name him Bartholomew most of the time. I did find a few times he was named Bartley. Uncle/father-in-law Jesse uses the names Dodson, William, etc. for his children. We know that Bartholomew married his first cousin Sarah. There is a Jesse Dodson--brother to Elizabeth Dodson. Have you seen the book written by Bettie Cox Collie? She lives in NC and compiled/wrote the book about 10 years ago. The Bennetts of Pittsylvania County, VA. Donald helped her with quite a bit of it. Several Louisiana descendants added our 2 cents worth. Thanks for updating this line. I did not know the name of William's first wife. Please keep in touch. If you are interested in the LA family, I will gladly send what I have. Ruth in Louisiana Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: SamMozley Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bennett/535.578.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thank you for this posting. It points to some likely confusions of William Bennetts in the Georgia Bennett book. I do know that Rachel White Bennett is my ancestor, because she is buried near her son William Benjamin and grandson Camelious Bennett, my g-g-grand-father, in the Fayetteville, GA City Cemetery. Some records list her maiden name as Jacob. Several records I had of Rachel's husband William Columbus, assuming him to the the son of William Columbus and Mary Frances Baugh, indeed don't make sense. Your William Columbus son of John fits known dates better. However, I do have some conflicts with your records. I have no records of sons named Bartholomew or Jesse. I suppose one or both might have been sons of W.C. by his first wife, about whom I did not know. Twelve children of Rachel and W.C. are listed in his Will of 25 July 1822 in Jackson Co, GA. (transcribed into the Georgia Bennett book), but none are named Jesse and one is named Bartley, not Bartholomew. A letter written by Arnold Bennett, son of W.c. and Rachels' son Asa about 1917 (transcribed into the GA Bennett book) says his Uncle Bartley settled in Louisiana. He also says Asa and Bartley's brother, his Uncle William Benjamin (my ancestor), owned and visited land in Texas before settling in Fayette County, GA. Do you have any ancestry of this W.C.'s father John? I have a John with brothers named William and Jesse, the three of them sons of a John Bennett who died in Isle of Wight County, VA on 4 October 1770. The dates seem about right, but I have nothing but names of this John's children, but got from the GA Bennett book that he descended from Thomas Bennett who came to Jamestown, VA from England before 1625.
