I have thomas Bennett in Martin Co. in 1750 and his children living in Martin Co. They got married in trryell Co in 1766.
You don't know how happy I would be if your Joseph is my Joseph! Joseph, born probably on 3 October, 1838. (As you have probably seen, some of them gave several birthdates, etc on different papers.) I like this date for Joseph, since I, his great grandson, was born on 4 November, 1938. His father was Noah Bennett, born about 1810, in South Carolina, and died before 1860, probably in Arkansas. Joseph's mother was Mary, maiden name unknown, born 1812-1816 in Kentucky. I know absolutely nothing to this date about their ancestors. Would kill for that info. I will copy a genealogical report on them to this message. It is several pages long, but hopefully you will find it interesting. I have been incredibly lucky. With daughter, we found Joseph's property where his house had been in late 1800s in Zephyr, Texas one day, starting from nothing at the county courthouse, and some of his Civil War pension papers. Strangely enough, I have carried my maternal ancestry (Lancasters) back for centuries, and found some Bennetts there back in England, during 1500s. If interested, I can give some names, dates and places there. Anyhow, here is Noah's gen. rpt. Ancestors of Noah Bennett Generation No. 1 1. Noah Bennett (Source: Census, 1850, Marian County, Arkansas, 328.), born Abt. 1810 in South Carolina (Source: 1850 Arkansas Census, 328.); died Bef. 1860. He married (1) Mary Bennett nee unknown. She was born 1816 in Kentucky, and died Aft. 1860. Notes for Noah Bennett: A great deal of fascinating information concerning early Marion County, Arkansas is available on the internet, with some of the best by an early resident named S. C. Turnbo, The Honorable W. B. Flippin in the "Mountain Echo", and other monographs by Vicki Roberts, Mysty McPherson, et al. We will start with the one Definite comment about NOAH BENNETTE (sic), in Turnbo's "The Names of a Few Pioneer People". He relates a conversation with a Mr. Brice Milum, an early settler on Crooked Creek, which, as near as I can gather from an AAA map of Arkansas and Oklahoma, wanders from near present day Harrison, Boone County, Arkansas through Yellville, to the White River. Mr. Milum an early farmer on Crooked Creek, then a "seller of goods" in Yellville during the Civil War era, and finally a resident of Lead Hill in Boone County, talked to Mr. Turnbo on 9 November, 1905, and mentioned early residents Bleuf Milum, Jimmie Magness, NOAH BENNETTE (sic), Mose Rowlet, Joel King, Bill Wood...George Wood, et al. NOAH, JOSEPH, and the rest of the family almost certainly know virtually all of them. Milum told of a hard shell Baptist preacher Napier who taught the first school in 1846. The school house stood near the creek, and was three miles above where Powell, Arkansas was then. One wonders if JOSEPH and his brothers and sisters attended. They might have attended Mr. Napiers services whether they went to his school or not. Another Hardshell Baptist preacher in the area was Jimmie Mayberry, who baptized people in Crooked Creek. He did most of his preaching at a place called Zion Hill. If the term "Hardshell" meant what is now called correctly Primitive Baptists, it might be significant, since many of the later Bennetts belonged and belong to that denomination. Flippin, in an 1800 article(s) dated May 9, 1899 in the "Mountain Echo", wrote what appears to be a first person account titled "Early History of Marion County". His writings give us a feel for living conditions for NOAH and his family. In 1836, the Flippins, Goodmans, Rutherfords, etc came as a group from Indiana and Tennessee. (MARY BENNETT, of course came from Kentucky originally.) The ones who came overland instead of by keel boat up the White River came through Southeast Missouri. Their exact route would be of interest. New Madrid some years after the great earthquake would be a good possibility. Those first settlers found an Edenic, wilderness area inhabited mainly by Shawnee Indians. Some claimed they were cousins of Tecumseh, and even told the new settlers of having been with him when he was killed. W. R. Jones, who wrote a series of articles for the Mountain Echo in 1929, believes the Indians came from near Mussel Shoals from either Tennessee, Georgia, or Alabama. They probably came over the military road from Memphis, built at the direction of President Andrew Jackson. An "Uncle Jack" Hurst, in 1899 one of the oldest living citizens of Marion County, said there were at least three Shawnee towns in Marion County, including one on Crooked Creek, less than a mile from a larger one called Shawneetown, on the site which became Yellville. (Legend has it that Yellville is named after a Governor Yell, who promised the settlers fifty dollars for the name. He was killed in the battle of Buena Vista during the Mexican War and never delivered on his promise) NOAH and MARY had been somewhere in Arkansas since at least 1834, when SAMUEL was born, at least part of the time on Crooked Creek. They almost certainly visited these places. Flippin is of the opinion that most of the inhabitants of Marion County have Indian blood in their veins. (As I recall, FRANK BENNETT was 1/4 Cherokee. Originally, the US had ceded, in 1817, all the land between the Arkansas and White rivers to the "civilized" Cherokees from East of the Mississippi. Apparently, the Shawnee and Cherokee are kin.) Flippen was very impressed with the fresh, clear streams (reported seeing fish for over 100 yards in White River) and wildlife, including in addition to "hundreds, yea thousands of...fine fish" wild deer, immense flocks of turkeys, panthers, wild cats, bear, and honey from trees. The land was free for the taking, with no taxes. The new families brought a large supply of merchandise, including several kinds of "fire water" for trading for "peltries", etc. The country was so sparsely settled that people came for 30 or 40 miles to trade. Flippin misses the days when "...we lived in peace...did not have to buy locks for our corn cribs or smoke houses...all had plenty...could kill a bear occasionally in winter, and save his bacon as we did a hog, or we could kill a turkey or a deer whenever we desired, or a large cat fish or buffalo (fish) at anytime. All seemed glad for his neighbor to visit him and have an evenings social chat, always ready and willing to assist his neighbor or divide with him when necessary...." (Sounds kindly like Boekerton, Missouri when I was a kid. JLB) He tells some tales of confrontations between human and bear/wolf/panther, but asserts that it was very unusual, and lists no injuries or deaths because of them. According to R. P. Jones, in articles in the Mountain Echo Newspaper from 1929, old settlers believed that DeSota had passed through what later became Marion County, although no evidence exists to support this to my knowledge. Apparently, there were some old Spanish coins found in the area, though Marion County resulted from a series of actions starting with the Louisiana Purchase. The land here was then part of Louisiana Territory, then Missouri Territory, then NEW MADRID COUNTY, MISSOURI Territory, then Lawrence County, Missouri Territory, then Lawrence County, Arkansas Territory, then Izard County, Arkansas Territory, then Searcy County, Arkansas Territory, then Searcy county, Arkansas, and finally Marion County Arkansas. According to the Bramble Bush issue of April, 1996, its geography lent itself to being a haven for lawless individuals such as horse thieves, moonshiners, counterfeiters, and even murderers. Hunting and trapping were the most common source of income. tanned hides brought good money in St Louis. A milk cow could be bought for $5 and corn was 10 cents a bushel. Trading was the most common way to acquire goods and services. A man could trade a good horse, saddle and bridle for a farm. One of the more notable events to occur in Marion county happened when JOSEPH BENNETT was about 10 years old. NOAH and his family certainly heard about it, but nothing is known about any direct involvement by any BENNETTS. Vicki A. Roberts wrote a good account of what she called "The Tutt, King, and Everett War". It was printed in the Marion County Bramble Bush issues of April 1997 through January 1998. According to her, backed up by Turnbo and Jones, the Everetts had been here for years, and were powerful as Democrats politically. The Tutts were from what was then Searcy County, and as Whigs ran that county. The Kings moved into the area from Alabama, and allied themselves politically with the Tutts. At the time, if you were affiliated with the ruling faction, you could get away with about anything, including murder, and never get in trouble with the law. Consequently, every election was, according to Roberts, a "dog fight". The enmity between these families was high at all times, with the whole male population, about 300 was classified as being in one camp or the other. In June, 1844, during the presidential election, a fight broke out at the Hamp Tutt house after some speech making, when Sim Everett, in his cups (said to have been a "gentle giant" when sober), started fisticuffs. Some attorneys visiting the house had luckily hid the guns in the house, almost certainly saving some lives at least for the short term. The major casualty was Sim, who was laid low by someone wielding a hoe. He recovered. After that time, both sides went armed. In 1847, Jesse Mooney, neither Whig nor Democrat, was elected sheriff. He promised to serve ALL warrants, against people from both sides. He held to his promises, and won a second term. After several fights, including one when Hamp Tutt tried to kill Mooney, Mooney effectively joined the Everetts. To make matters worse, in this election, Ewell Everett was elected judge, and George Adams, a Tutt man, was elected constable. Things went from bad to worse. Another bad fight, where rocks, sticks, and bricks were used, occurred on Monday, 9 October, 1848, but was providentially broken up by a whirlwind which suddenly sprang up and blew between the two factions. Everybody scattered. Of some interest here is the fact that SILAS COWAN, on the Everett side, instigated the fight according to Turnbo. Whether or not he was kin to SARAH COWAN is unknown. When Sheriff Mooney got back to town (he had been absent with his pregnant wife), Bart Everett demanded the arrest of the Kings because of the fight. Mooney dutifully went over to Searcy County and with no problems, arrested the unarmed Kings. The Everetts, however, waylaid them on the way back to Yellville, killing Uncle Billy King, and his son Lumas. Hosea and James King made their escape, and Cherokee Bob and Young Billy King were seriously wounded. Billy died from his wounds. Sheriff Mooney decided to "lay down the law", resulting in a pitched battle on 4 July, 1849. Guns, sticks, bricks, axes, knives, and anything else which would kill or maim were used. The result was ten men killed, including Bart and Sim Everett and Davis, Ben and Lunsford Tutt. No COWANS were involved. Turnbo witnessed this fight. Another pro Tutts man, Dave Sinclair, was killed by Everett's friends the next day. In September, Arkansas Governor John Sheldon Roane sent General Allan Wood to Marion County, with militia to bring peace. Martial law ensued, lasting for six weeks, and all was quiet. Several Everetts were jailed, in Lawrence County. That winter, the militia was let go, and Everett followers promptly broke their leaders out of jail, and they vowed to kill Hamp Tutt, and finally did in August, 1850. The Everetts left the county shortly thereafter, finally closing the Marion County War.
