Surnames: Bennett, Bennet, Bennette Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/BRD.2ACEB/6271.1 Message Board Post: I found Thomas Bennett, son of John Bennett (no wife listed), and older brother of James and Elizabeth Bennett in Foy, Herefordshire, in the 1841 census. He does not appear again in the 1851 census - but James is listed in the 1851 census of Foy where he is now the owner of his father's estate - which hires many laborers, etc. It's possible that this Thomas Bennett died or moved away for some reason. HOWEVER - it's also quite possible that he had a falling out with his father and brother and moved to America during the 1840s. My Thomas was born in abt 1811. He married in Iowa, Phoebe Creswell (daughter of John W. and Mary Agnes Boal Creswell). Their children were: 1. Dolly Agnes Bennett 2. Mary Elizabeth Bennett 3. John Bennett (my GG grandfather). I suspect that Thomas Bennett of Foy, Herefordshire, is MY Thomas Wood Bennett, but have not been able to find corroborating evidence. I'm asking for help. If anyone in the UK is a descendent of James Bennett, son of John Bennett of Foy, Hereforshire, please contact me. I may participate in a DNA project, too, and that might shed some light. Many thanks in advance, Greg

At the rootsweb sites, Linda Shelton evidently has a lot of research on the same line as Marion T. BENNETT. I am a BENNETT descendant of this line. My great uncle Marion T. BENNETT wrote about this reunion in his book THE BENENTT BOOK: EIGHT GENERATIONS TO 1960, Washington , D.C, 1960 while he was serving in Congress as a senator from MO. There were other books written about this line too by other relatives. I can send the Marion T. BENNETT book to those who may be related. If you are related, you will probably have VAnamed John and Lucy. You may also have relatives named Philip or Basil in Spencer C., KY. or you may have ancestors that I don't know about from Ohio, a split off group from my line, or Indiana - unlikely, as no one ever heard from that line after they left- or from the Carolinas etc. via Virginia, again, I don't know who they are yet. YES. Please send me a copy of this reunion book. And I will gladly send you a copy of the Word document form of Marion T. BENNETT's booklet.
I am Bennett and alot of my family settled in Yancey Co.NC before moving on to Wise Co. Va. and that area.(then onto WV.)Is it possible that your Yancey name could be from that? In a message dated 10/12/2006 12:16:20 A.M. Pacific Standard Time, [email protected] writes: The Indian massacre in Jamestown was mitigated somewhat due to a warning from an Indian boy through Richard Pace, a direct ancestor of mine through my maternal ancestry which eventually became Lancasters in Mississippi and Missouri. Your mention of Joseph Hardin Bennett is interesting. My great grandfather was Joseph S (probably. He used different initials) Bennett. He joined the 27th Arkansas Infantry early in the Civil War, but deserted and went to Missouri and joined a Yankee cavalry unit. His daughter-in-law (my grandmother) was a Hardin. I"m not too far back in those lines, but all the way back to William the Conqueror's time with the many names which became, through marriage, Lancaster. I am obviously descended from second or later children, 'cause I just aint got any of their money ================ I have been trying to see if there is a link between a Joseph BENNETT in the book about whom little is written and Joseph Hardin BENNETT. If you do a google search of him, you should be able to pick up some information about him there. He married the daughter of a well-known, part Cherokee Indian (mostly European) chief named Joel Bryan MAYES (sometimes listed as Joel Mayes BRYAN). Joseph Hardin BENNETT was happy with his wife but she died leaving no children. Then he married a white woman (he himself was white) and the trouble began. Although he was still accepted by the Cherokees and still active in their leadership as were many of the subsequent BENNETT children of his marriage with Hulda RINGO, the white woman he fell in love with, he ran into trouble because of the Cherokee removals and the Cherokee's fears of their claims at the time of the Dawes roll later on being diluted by the presence of so many whites, or "intruders," as they came to become called. Contradictions between the full-bloods and the mixed bloods, many of whom were only 1/32 or less Cherokee but in positions of power and often having more money, were heightened. His membership (he had been officially adopted as a young teenager who had run away from home to seek out the Cherokees intentionally) was reconsidered, rejected, accepted again, etc. in a number of lawsuits. Finally by the time it was all settled and he was reinstated, he was dead. His descendants were Sears. They are still active in politics. One is running right now for office in South Carolina, I believe, under the name Wright, if I am not mistaken. I will send you a copy of the book in Word although the hardcopy has maps and better charts--I am no great word processing wiz. Victoria

I don't have any CT Bennetts of which I am aware, but our line of BENNETTS (VA>KY/OH/IND>PA/IL>MO) did marry into the NORMAN family. Glad to send the small Bennett booklet to anyone interested in the few Normans that are in it - might be good to get a sense of where some of them might have gone etc. Victoria P.S. I had to re-do the index and title page because when I put in the page numbers on Marion T. Bennett's booklet, they were no longer accurate. So please excuse the delay in getting them out. Note the maps and some charts and heraldry are not included at this point because I don't know enough about word processing yet. Please let me know if you find typos etc. The format is not so great, but it is readable now. I am trying to figure out how to use templates for my next revision which will be in 12 point and easier to read --- some time off though as I am too busy with my other family histories on the other side of the family. My little Bennett newsletter - completely informal - comes out once a month on average and is a collection of THIS and THAT, there I call it BENNETT THIS AND THAT. In it anyone interested in the Benett or Bennet or Benid or O'Bennett or other variants of the name can post stories, folklore, recipes and that sort of thing. Also includes Bennetts from all religious and ethnic backgrounds as there are many people who do not fit into the dominant and usual British/Norman heritage entirely but carry the name. It may be of interest to those who like offbeat stories, lost ancestors who were off on their own "out West" or on Indian reservations etc., doing research on one-name studies or population genetics, migration studies, ethnic studies, women's studies, history of religions, early colonial history, Civil War studies, abolitionist studies, Appalachian studies, Ozark studies, slavery studies, Native American studies, Melungeon studies, medieval royalty studies, Sephardic studies, Holocaust studies, word etymology, etc. Will look for a moderator to take over once the newsletter gets off the ground as I cannot invest the time to do it properly. It is NOT intended to compete with existing newsletters which focus more on genealogical sources although people may find clues to their ancestors or links to sites where they can find sources. Also it is not intended as a talk forum or social forum, just a place to share things that might "clutter up" some newsletters. Also, free of rules about posting books you may have written yourself or a friend has. Victoria B
