Rank and organization: Corporal, U.S. Army, Company B, 358th Infantry, 90th Infantry Division. Place and date: Heckhuscheid, Germany, February 1945. Entered service at: Middleport, Ohio. Birth: Middleport, Ohio. G.O. No.: 95, 30 October 1945. Citation: He was advancing with Company B across open ground to assault Heckhuscheid, Germany, just after dark when vicious enemy machinegun fire from a house on the outskirts of the town pinned down the group and caused several casualties. He began crawling to the edge of the field in an effort to flank the house, persisting in this maneuver even when the hostile machinegunners located him by the light of burning buildings and attempted to cut him down as he made for the protection of some trees. Reaching safety, he stealthily made his way by a circuitous route to the rear of the building occupied by the German gunners. With his trench knife he killed a sentry on guard there and then charged into the darkened house. In a furious hand-t! o-hand struggle he stormed about a single room which harbored 7 Germans. Three he killed with rifle fire, another he clubbed to death with the butt of his gun, and the 3 others he dispatched with his .45 caliber pistol. The fearless initiative, stalwart combat ability, and outstanding gallantry of Cpl. Bennett eliminated the enemy fire which was decimating his company's ranks and made it possible for the Americans to sweep all resistance from the town. Burial: San Bruno, CA in Golden Gate National Cemetery 1920 in Middleport, Ohio - 1983 Additional Information and cemetery monument photo: http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/pages_af/bennett_edward.html
This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/BRD.2ACEB/1691.1728 Message Board Post: Jethro Bennett was the third son of Jacob and Sarah Phillips Bennett. he was born 9 October 1835. He first married Eliza Howes, daughter of Joseph and Hepzibah Howes who were in Barbour County during the 1850 Census. One source said she died in childbirth and is buried in the Lee Cemetery near Belington with her stillborn child. Another source said she died in a house fire in her home while pregnant and her remains are interred in the Lee Cemetery near Bellington with her unborn child. Jethro was a farmer by trade, Jethro spent most of his adult life in this endeavor. They lived most of the time on Hunters Fork Road in Barbour County. On 11 October 1860 he married his first cousin Phoebe Ellen Moore, a daughter of William and Sarah Bennett Moore. Her mother, Sarah Bennett Moore was a sister to Jacob Bennett, Jethro's Father. In any event he and Phoebe had a total of thirteen children from 1861 to 1888. Nine of these children were perfectly normal. However, four of them were born with feebleness as a result of being too closely related. This practice of marrying first cousins did not stop until sometime after 1924. Jethro and Phoebe almost set the record for the total number of children born in a family, thirteen. One family had a total of 14 children, Jethro and Phoebe had a total of 141 Grandchildren, which must be some kind of record.Their children i have are as follows Emeline 1861, Richard 1862, Calvin 1863, Phineus 1867, Velina 1869, Martha 1872, William 1875, Laban 1876, Minnie 1877, Charles 1884, Lloyd 1880, Ora Bruce 1887, & Thurmond 1888 I hope this will help you some. I come down from Lab! an Bennett a brother to Jethro, I have done extensive work on the Bennetts but have not touched it for about 10 years now. I have been working on my mothers side which is Carroll. Take care and God Bless Jim
Bennett, Leo E., M.D. (pp. 122, 123, 124) _Biographical Index_ (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pennstreet/IndianTerr.htm) The subject of this sketch was born at Wyandotte, Kansas, November 27, 1857. His father, Dr. James E. Bennett (deceased), was a physician and surgeon --- graduated of the University of Maryland. He served in the Fourteenth Kansas Cavalry throughout the war, after which he was postmaster in Fort Smith, Arkansas, during Grant's administration. Leo received his education at Rugby Academy, Wilmington, Delaware, and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, graduating in medicine at the University of Tennessee in 1883. Between the years 1869 and 1872 he served his apprenticeship in the newspaper business at Fort Smith, Arkansas. In the fall of 1883 he removed to Eufaula, Creek Nation, where, in addition to the private practice, he was employed as United States examining surgeon for pensions and surgeon of the Missouri Pacific Railway. Dr. Bennett, on account of the illness of his father, returned to Fort Smith in the spring of 1884, and there engaged in practice. In the fall of the same year he was married, at Eufaula, to Louie, youngest daughter of Judge G. W. Stidham, Chief Justice of the Creek Nation. About six weeks afterward his father died, and this event was followed by the death of his mother eight months later. In the spring of 1885 Dr. Bennett located near Eufaula and recommenced practice. Just two years afterward he purchased the material of the Indian Journal and moved it to Eufaula. Selling out in a few months, he bought a new plant and started the Muskogee Phoenix (February, 1888), which he conducted until April, 1889, when he was appointed United States Indian Agent for the Indians of the Union Agency, embracing the five civilized tribes, which position he still holds; and at this writing (October, 1891) has been appointed "Special Disbursing Agent" to make payments to Delaware Indians of nearly a half million of dollars, and for which he gave a bond with sworn security of more than one million and a quarter dollars, filling the bond in less than twenty-four hours. Agent Bennett owns 1,000 acres of improved farm land in the Creek Nation, besides two eighty-acre farms in Arkansas. He is also owner of good town property in Muskogee, Eufaula and Wagoner; add to this one hundred head of cattle and twenty horses. Agent Bennett is one of the incorporators and a director of the First National Bank of Muskogee, as also of the Adams Hotel Company, of the same town. He has been president of the Muskogee Live Stock Association, representing some 80,000 head of cattle, for three years. He was also President of the Indian National Fair Association in 1888. At the present time Mr. Bennett is United States Commissioner for the Western District of Arkansas; also treasurer of the Board of United States Examining Surgeons for Pensions, at Muskogee. The subject of our sketch is a member of the Astrea Chapter, No. 14, Order of the Eastern Star. He is serving his third term as Grand Master of Masons of the Indian and Oklahoma Territories, being a member of Muskogee Lodge, No. 28. He is Grand Scribe in Muskogee Chapter, No. 3. He is also a member of the Oklahoma Council,Royal and Select Masters, and Sir Knight Generalissimo in Muskogee Commandry, No. 1; is Past Grand Chancellor and Supreme Representative of the Knights of Pythias of the Indian Territory, and a member of Phoenix Lodge, No. 3 (so named in honor of the newspaper founded by him.). Mr. Bennett has two children --- Gertie Ethel, aged six, and Louie Abie, aged four years. In personal appearance Agent Bennett is tall and rather slight, refined and intellectual-looking. His address and bearing indicate refinement and an education above the average. Few men have risen so rapidly or attained so much in such a brief period as Agent Bennett. Not only does he stand high with the present government, but with the people of all races and denominations. He is a gentleman of high moral rectitude and a good Christian. _http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pennstreet/ITsketches.htm#Bennett_ (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pennstreet/ITsketches.htm#Bennett)

Dear Maria, One person also said that the name's origin was Native American for Yankee and fairly common. If it shows up in early England or elsewhere, that might contradict that theory. Someone else wrote, excerpted without names: ",,, was right. There was a movie "Yancy Derringer" in 1958, however you should see the long list of persons in the movie industry with Yancy as a surname or a given name." Victoria
