    3. This is a letter I received months ago from a fellow Belcher researcher.. From: Nancy DeVore Williams <williams@internettport.net> To: "Herman D. Belcher Sr." <hbelcher@prodigy.net> Hi Herman, You mention your John and Sullivan Belcher in Franklin Co, AL and ask if they help and quite frankly, I just don't know. MY John Belcher first appears in Jefferson County, AL with his first land purcahse abt 1822 (top of my head, but I think it's right!). He was married in 1815, but to my knowledge no one has figured our where yet. His exact marriage date and many birth and death dates come from a ledger that you used in astore that he owned. In it he recorded many of the dates of his family. I have seen claims that he was married in Alabama in 1815, but I've yet to see any proof. Ive also seen claims that his eldest son was born in 1817 inTennessess, still no proof. A TON has been done on his descendants. Many of them spread (early) to Arkansas and then on to Texas. A few of them stayed in Jefferson Co. (in and around Birmingham) and were very prolific. What more can I say? Please let me know if I've left out something..... Sounds like she knows more about these Belchers than I do...and I am from there..hehe Herman Jane Belcher wrote: > Hi. I have a Nathaniel Belcher from the 1820 census in Ft. Gaines, Ga. 1. [BELCHER] FLOYD & ARMEDIA RIFFE WV TO WA 1893 RIFFE COMMUNITY BORN (CONTINUED)
    2. PAYNE FAMILY
    3. (FROM WASHINGTON, The Evergreen State Magazine. Vol Two. Number Six May/June 1986, pp. 100, 105+, Article, THE T0WN THAT DROWNED BY Stephen Maher....FOLLOWING is last half of article. QUOTE; In the 1920s, the automobile began to change the town of Riffe. Most were Fords, or, as they called them then, Tin Lizzies. The tight kinship still held fast in Riffe, but people became more mobile and less dependent on one another. The improvement in transportton also allowed another Appalachian tradition--moonshining--to flourish and the liquor to be easily transported across county lines as far afield as Tacoma. "On most of the creeks you'd run into stills," says Marsha Bartley of Mossyrock, who settled in Riffe in 1924. "They'd sell it to whoever wanted to buy it. Even a stage line used to haul it." The moonshining helped supplement meager incomes during the Great Depression, when some families were threatened with the loss of their homes and land. "During the Depression people lived on fish and game," says GlenSchwartz. "If you had a few old cows, you had to trade them for sugar and salt. You couldn't eat them." As the 1930s came to a close and the ecoomy improved, railroad-tie mills run by independent loggers sprang up everywhere and became the main source of employment until the 1960s. At one time during the mid-1940s, 22 tie mills were operating in the immediate vicinity, and the town of Morton, eight miles east of Riffe, was dubbed the railroad-tie capital of the world. In 1946, the City of Tacoma purchased the rights to the Cowlitz River, and shortly thereafter announced plans to build two dams in the Slver Creek-Riffe area. But a court battle developed and 10 years passed before Tacoma was finally given the go-ahead. The people of Riffe were naturally fearful of what a dam downstream might mean to them and their land. When their fears became a reality, a cloud of doom settled over the town. By 1963, the year the first dam 15 miles downstream was completed, most residents of Riffe had sold their property and moved to nearby communities. The dam was 606 feet high, l,648 feet long and 115 feet wide at the base when it was finally completed. Many former residents of the town climbed the hills overlooking Riffe's former site and watched as familir physical features vanished. Before long, an 11,830-acre lake with 53 miles of shoreline engulfed the area where Riffe had been. Today, Riffe Lake is peaceful. During winter months, when the water is lowered slightly and rotting tree stumps stick out, visions of some far-off, eerie land come to mind. In the summer, when boaters take to the water and sunbathers gather at Mossyrock Park, it's easy to forget that the site of Riffe lies 225 feet below the surface. On the north side of the lake next to the dam, there is a turnoff from US Highway 12 frequented by tourists and travelers. A wooden sign with orange letters stands next to the parking lot and remnds readers that the name of the lake "honors the founders and early settlers of the community of Riffe." No mention is made of the crude ferry boat that used to cross the Cowlitz, loggers living in unpainted shacks of clapboard or broad fields of foxglove and clover. And perhaps that is wise, for it adds to the mystery and intrigue one feels when gazing at Riffe Lake and thnking of the town that once was. (The End) QUESTION: DOES A LIST OF THESE SIXTY PEOPLE WHO CAME WEST WITH FLOYD AND ARMEDIA RIFFE EXIST? Mrried Armedia Blankenship 3 March 1881, Born 16 Nov 1855 Virginia: d/o Conley Blankenship.-- Following is the first apporx. half of the article. The remainder will be forhcoming . QUOTE....... IN THE LOW foothills of the Cascades, situated behind the Northwest's tallest dam, lie the greenish-blue waters of Riffe Lake. Nearby hills, with their checkerboard pattern of farms, keep the lake company, as does Mt. St. Helens, 25 miles to the southeast. Like other reservoirs, Riffe Lake is a haven for people who enjoy fishing, wterskiing, sailing and camping. But Riffe Lake is more than just a recreational hot spot. It is a lake with a story beneath its waters. When workers plugged the dam back in 1968, the rising waters of the Cowlitz River flooded the last remains of the town of Riffe and left only a ripple of memories behind. It all began in the fall of l893, when a party of more than 60 Appalachian hllbillies led by Floyd Riffe, A Southern Baptist minister, traveled eight days in a boxcar from West Virginia to Chehalis. A month later part of the group forged 40 miles east with horse and wagon to the old Bodiford homestead on the Cowlitz. There, Floyd Riffe purchased 160 acres from the widowed Mrs. Bodiford, and the community of Riffe was born. The early settlers had left the Appalachian Mountains because the water there was bad and the ground so rocky that dirt had ro be carried in to cover hills of corn. Out west in the Cascade foothills they found the water clear and clean and the earth rich. Due to its isolation, Riffe's early settleers tended to be self-reliant and jacks-of-all-trades. Floyd Riffe was no excepton, He was a farmer, loggeer, minister, doctor (though unlicensed) and the leader of the community. He also established the first Riffe Post Office in his home and served as its postmaster until 1904. A grandson, Glen Schwartz of Mossyrock, remembers his grandfather's days as the area's only medical practitioner. "Anybody who got sick called Granddad Riffe. He had a black satchel and a tiny white pill that he used as a painkiller. He'd get on horseback and go see the person," Schwartz says. During the early part of the century and for the most part untiil the 1960s, Riffe was isolated from nearby towns because of the clannish nature of its people. They had transplanted themselves to another part of the world, but little else changed in their lives. They played their music. They hunted and raised crops. 3. Finally someone on the Alabama Belcher's....I have a John Belcher that is buried in Centreville, Alabama..but he was born 1 Dec 1822 and d. 14 Oct 1885 and married to Susan C. Abbott..b.1838 d.1886..I have no info as to where he came from, but due to him having some children buried in Perry County, Alabama I believe he is out of the Obidiah Belcher family out of Georgia.. I don't know if he was married again, as I only have grave sites and FTM cd's to go on.. Herman ftroop8@juno.com wrote: > I am looking for the ancestors of Nathaniel C. Belcher. 3. I just found Almira Belcher this weekend while researching the Loop line. Does anybody know to whom she belongs? Parents?? Siblings?? birth? death? etc. David Loop b abt 1786, probably Washington Co, NY m1 Sally Fletcher and m2 Almira Belcher. From what I saw, they didn't have any kids and were married by the 1850 NY Census. This would really be "fun" for me to find a double Belcher connection. My Belcher line: Henry/Harvey/Harry? Belcher b 1820 m Susan Williams 13 Sep 1841 in Grundy Co, MO. The offspring of two of their daughters 1. Missouri Ann Elizabeth Belcher m in MO William Leonard Stepp 2. Martha Jane Belcher m in MO Thompson Boneurgus Harrington, JR married each other. Missouri's dau Lora Valley Stepp married Martha's son Ulysses Harvey Harrington. Ulysses Harvey and Lora Valley had my dad's dad, Harvey Dale Harrington SR. So, the Henry/Harvey Belcher I'm researching is my 3rd Great Grandfather twice. I'd love to know who his parents are and who his siblings are. I'm so happy because last week I met on the net a descendant of one of his sons, Thomas H. Belcher, the brother born right in between Missouri and Martha. That's the closest I've come since joining this list. Belcher Cuz, Phyl
